Fábio Vieira has returned to FC Porto on loan from Arsenal, revealing that a desire to play games has fuelled his move home.
The 24-year-old sealed a move back to the Dragões after a tough couple of years in the Premier League with Arsenal, where game time has been restricted.
He’s now looking forward to Europa League football, where Manchester United, Lazio and Anderlecht are among the opponents.
Latest Porto Move
Speaking to Porto’s media, the midfielder expressed his excitement about coming back to his former team in search of regular football, and kickstarting his career.
“I’m happy, obviously, it’s my home. I’m looking forward to being in the stadium, playing in front of these fans and doing the best I can for this club this season,” he said, before explaining that his return was primarily motivated by his need to play consistently, especially after a challenging period in England.
“It was a possibility that, above all, came to me because it was something I already wanted: to play. I had a difficult period in England due to two injuries and surgery, and I felt that FC Porto was a good opportunity to continue growing and developing. I felt that this was the right place to do it this season.”
Despite his history with Porto, Vieira is under no illusions about the competition for places: “On an individual level, I come here with the intention of giving my best, nothing is guaranteed. I will have to give my all to contribute to the team. When you wear this jersey, you have to fight for every title, every competition. That is what we will try to do.”
Now wearing the number 10 shirt, Vieira downplayed its significance: “It’s a number like any other. People often say the number 10 is associated with left feet, but for me that’s irrelevant. It’s about the player, and I will give my all for the club and bring joy to our fans.”
Fábio Vieira’s Career
The 24-year-old’s return to FC Porto on loan from Arsenal marks a significant chapter in his career. The midfielder, who began his football journey in Porto’s youth ranks, played a crucial role in the club’s 2018–19 UEFA Youth League triumph, scoring in the final against Chelsea. After debuting for the senior team in 2020, Vieira’s talent quickly became evident, contributing to Porto’s domestic double in the 2021–22 season, where he provided 14 assists and scored six goals.
Vieira’s impressive performances earned him a move to Arsenal in 2022 for €35 million (£29.9 million). Although he faced challenges with injuries and competition for places, he still managed to deliver in patches, including scoring in the Premier League and converting the decisive penalty in Arsenal’s FA Community Shield victory against Manchester City in 2023. However, Vieira struggled for consistent game time at Arsenal, leading to his season-long loan.

This could be a different level signing for Porto, who will hope to challenge at the top of the Liga Portugal, a competition they have won 30 times. Last season’s third-placed finish was their first outside the top two in eight seasons, and that isn’t a situation they want to see repeated.
His creativity could be vital – he excels in creating opportunities for his teammates. His ability to play in multiple positions across the midfield—whether centrally or on the wing—gives Porto tactical flexibility. He is particularly known for his vision, accurate passing, and ability to deliver set-pieces effectively.
During his previous stint at Porto, Vieira was instrumental in their domestic double win, contributing 14 assists and scoring six goals. His experience playing in the Premier League with Arsenal has added to his maturity and adaptability on the pitch. His creative playmaking will be vital as Porto aims to compete in both domestic and European competitions.
