Glasgow Rangers have identified Republic of Ireland international Cyrus Christie as a potential replacement for long-serving captain James Tavernier, as reported by Team Talk.
The 31-year-old right-back, who is currently a free agent after leaving Hull City in July, is reportedly attracting interest from both Rangers and several Championship clubs. Rangers, keen to strengthen their options at right-back, have turned their attention to Christie following the closure of the Scottish transfer window, making the free-agent defender an appealing target.
Reports suggest that Coventry City, Preston North End, and other Championship sides, including Millwall and Plymouth Argyle, are also vying for Christie’s signature. A return to Coventry, where Christie began his professional career, is a strong possibility. Coventry City’s current right-back, Milan van Ewijk, has been linked with a move to Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven, which could pave the way for an emotional homecoming for Christie.
The experienced right-back began his professional football journey at Coventry City, making his debut in August 2010 in a League Cup match. His early career saw him gain experience through loan spells at non-league clubs Nuneaton Town and Hinckley United.
In 2014, Christie moved to Derby County, signing a three-year contract. He quickly established himself in the Championship, providing assists and solid defensive performances. Christie scored his first goal for the Rams in a 3-1 win against Brentford in 2016. His time at Derby saw him grow into a reliable Championship player before moving to Middlesbrough in 2017.
In January 2018, Christie transferred to Fulham, where he played a key role in their promotion to the Premier League. During the 2018/19 season, he made 23 appearances in the Premier League, gaining valuable top-flight experience. After a loan spell at Swansea City in 2022, where he scored against Bristol City, Christie left Fulham as a free agent. He later joined Hull City in August 2022, making 42 appearances before his release in May 2024.
It’s been a tough start for Rangers in the SPFL this season. They are in fourth place in the Scottish Premiership, having played four matches with two wins, one draw, and one loss. They’ve accumulated seven points and sit behind rivals Celtic, Aberdeen, and Dundee United in the standings. They are in the Europa League, where Malmo and Lyon are among their group-stage opponents.

While Christie may not match Tavernier’s prolific attacking contributions, the Irishman remains a creative force on the right-hand side, having provided 42 assists and scored 13 goals throughout his career. With Rangers looking to bolster their squad for both domestic and European campaigns, Christie’s experience and availability make him an attractive option for the Glasgow club.
At 31, Christie still has a couple of good years left at a high level. His athleticism, experience, and leadership could provide a useful counterbalance in key matches, especially in European competitions where tactical nous and composure are essential.
On the downside, Christie’s age means he’s unlikely to be a long-term solution, and his best years might be behind him. However, as a short-term option, he could offer valuable depth and competition for Tavernier.
