Arrest Warrant Issued For Former Porto and Manchester United Player

A Brazilian court has issued an arrest warrant for former FC Porto and Manchester United midfielder Anderson, over unpaid child support.

Anderson, who owes over €53,000 to the mother of his two children, has been ordered to serve 30 days in detention by the 6th Civil Family Court of Porto Alegre if the debt is not settled.

According to reports, Anderson is expected to serve his sentence at the Irmão Miguel Dario Prison in Porto Alegre, his hometown, unless he makes the overdue payment. The court has indicated that he could serve his time in a closed or semi-open regime, the latter allowing him to work or study during the day while returning to prison at night.

The former footballer, who is believed to have five children, now faces significant legal consequences if the outstanding sum is not paid. Anderson’s legal troubles are not limited to child support: in 2021, he was named as one of eight defendants under investigation for allegedly laundering £4.7 million through cryptocurrency. It remains unclear if that investigation has concluded.

Anderson began his professional career at Grêmio before earning a move to Europe with Portuguese giants FC Porto. Joining the Portuguese giants as a teenager, Anderson impressed with his technical ability, vision, and versatility in midfield. His dribbling skills, close control, and creative play made him a standout in the Primeira Liga, where he helped Porto win the league title. These performances earned him the prestigious Golden Boy award in 2008, an accolade given to the best young player in Europe, further solidifying his reputation as one of the brightest prospects in world football.

His performances in the Primeira Liga quickly caught the attention of Manchester United, who signed him in 2007. Anderson was part of a successful era at United, making over 180 appearances for the club during an eight-year stint. He won four Premier League titles, two League Cups, and the UEFA Champions League in 2008, contributing significantly in midfield, especially during United’s domestic dominance.

Although Anderson showed flashes of brilliance, his time at Manchester United was often marred by inconsistency and injuries, preventing him from fully living up to his early potential. Following his time at Old Trafford, Anderson returned to Brazil with Internacional but struggled to regain his form. He also had a brief loan spell at Fiorentina in Italy before retiring from football in 2020.
