FC Basel Fans Banned From Sion Encounter

Following violent clashes between supporters of FC Basel and FC Sion on August 31st, no visiting supporters will be admitted to the reverse fixture.

The disturbances took place before the two sides played out a 1-1 draw in the Swiss Super League, with violence erupting in the city centre between rival fans.

As a result of these incidents, the working group of licensing authorities has imposed sanctions on FC Basel supporters. The group announced on Wednesday that no tickets will be sold to Basel fans for the next game at Sion’s Stade de Tourbillon, and the away section will remain closed. The decision stems from investigations that determined Basel fans were the aggressors in the altercation.

According to the authorities, a group of around 20 masked FC Basel ultras launched an attack on a restaurant frequented by Sion supporters. One individual was injured and required hospital treatment. The licensing body stated that “aggression was provoked by Basel supporters,” prompting the decision to close the guest sector.

FC Basel has been urged to discourage its supporters from travelling to Sion for the next encounter. Additionally, Basel fans will face heightened scrutiny for the rest of the year. The licensing authorities have warned that additional penalties could include closing the home section at Basel’s St. Jakob-Park for a future match if further disturbances occur.

The date of the next match between FC Basel and FC Sion in Valais is yet to be confirmed. However, authorities have made it clear that strict measures will be enforced to prevent further unrest.

Site Opinion: FC Basel at Disadvantage

The stadium ban for FC Basel’s away fans will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the club, both on and off the pitch. Basel supporters are known for their passionate backing, and playing without them in Sion could rob the team of the vocal encouragement that often lifts their performances. This absence of away support may provide FC Sion with a psychological edge, as they will be able to focus solely on the match without the usual distractions of rival fans. For Basel, the lack of travelling supporters could make the game feel more like an uphill battle, especially in a hostile environment where Sion fans will dominate the stands.

This is not the first instance of misbehaviour from Basel fans. Over the years, the club has faced other incidents involving its ultras, which have occasionally resulted in fines and stadium restrictions. The fact that the licensing authorities are now closely monitoring Basel’s supporters until the winter break suggests a growing concern about fan conduct. If the behaviour persists, Basel could face even harsher sanctions, including home game restrictions, which would further strain the relationship between the club and its fanbase. The club will need to work hard to ensure these incidents don’t escalate, as it could have long-lasting consequences on their season.
