Union Supporters Stand by Team After Loss to Cercle Brugge

After three seasons of success, Union Saint-Gilloise is finding this campaign far more challenging.

Following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Cercle Brugge, Union fans displayed their unwavering support, singing in unison for the team rather than voicing discontent. The atmosphere at Duden Park was notably serene, a rare oasis of solidarity in an often impassioned football world.

Union’s head coach Sébastien Pocognoli led his team towards the stands post-match, where the squad was met with songs from fans rather than criticism. In a tribute to a recently deceased supporter, players and fans alike joined in, capturing the moment with a group photo—a display of unity that lingered long after the final whistle.

Reflecting on the loss, goalkeeper Anthony Moris said, “It hurt our hearts to lose, but we will keep fighting. For everyone here, especially for our supporters.” The players and staff then retreated to the dressing room, staying longer than usual to debrief the match and regroup.

“What was said there? That stays between us,” Pocognoli remarked. “I always give my speeches in the dressing room and not on the pitch.” He added candidly, “We are left here with a feeling of disappointment—about the course of the match, about some players who remained below their level, and also about the supporters who we would have liked to give the three points as a gift.”

The defeat highlighted ongoing issues for Union, who have now accumulated only eight points from their last 24. Despite multiple chances to take control in the second half, the team struggled to convert opportunities—a recurring problem this season. Pocognoli acknowledged the challenge, saying, “And you know that Cercle is a direct and opportunistic team. They punished us, and we paid for it.”

Union’s performance this season may be disappointing in terms of results, but their fans’ loyalty stands out as an exceptional example of sporting solidarity. In an era where fans often turn against their teams in tough times, Union supporters have shown that their commitment runs deep. The heartfelt singing after yet another narrow loss underscores the unique bond between the players and their fanbase. This type of support is rare and valuable, especially for a team facing challenges on the field.

From a tactical perspective, Union’s repeated struggles to convert chances are becoming a genuine concern. Despite decent build-up play and promising chances, the team has failed to find a cutting edge in the final third, often stumbling against well-organised defences like Cercle’s. If they are to turn the season around, Pocognoli’s side must find a way to capitalise on their opportunities and build on the resilience that their fans so passionately embody.
