‘We Are Special” – Former Stoke City Man On Beerschot’s Surprise Resurgence

Beerschot secured a narrow victory over KV Mechelen in the Croky Cup, winning 4-3 on penalties after a hard-fought draw.

The match was a testament to Beerschot’s growing resilience, especially on their home turf at the Kiel. Goalkeeper Nick Shinton emerged as the hero, saving crucial penalties to guide his team through to the quarter-finals.

Not By Chance

Reflecting on Beerschot’s recent success at home former Stoke City and Bolton Wanderers player, Thibaud Verlinden said:

“It’s not by chance that we’re performing well here. Everyone says it’s a stunt, but I don’t think anyone likes to come here to play football.”

Despite the pitch not being in the best condition, Verlinden insisted that Beerschot’s home advantage is a unique one.

“We are special, Beerschot is special,” he said. “We are used to it, and for now, it’s going well.”

The victory came on the back of a crucial comeback against Cercle Brugge in the league, with the team’s confidence continuing to build. Beerschot may be sitting at the bottom of the league table, but the players’ spirits remain high. “We never let our heads hang,” Verlinden added. “We’ve had a lot of mental knocks this season, but we often come out on top.”

Although Verlinden was impressive throughout the match, he credited goalkeeper Nick Shinton with being the evening’s hero. “Shinton has taken a few penalties. He is the big hero tonight.”

Looking ahead, Verlinden acknowledged the challenges awaiting his team. Beerschot will travel to Anderlecht this weekend.

“That will be very difficult,” he said. “We will take it match by match. Then there are two important matches at home against Kortrijk and Standard. A lot will depend on whether we stay in or not.”

Site Opinion

Beerschot’s penalty victory over KV Mechelen at the Kiel marks an important milestone for the team, especially as they continue to face challenges both on and off the pitch. Their ability to perform under pressure, particularly at home, could be a game-changer for the club in the upcoming rounds of the Croky Cup. Despite the often-difficult playing conditions, Beerschot’s determination and teamwork shine through, making them a force to be reckoned with in the competition.

As for the future, Beerschot’s resilience will be tested in their upcoming fixtures. Their recent form suggests that they are capable of achieving more significant results, but they must maintain focus and continue to overcome the mental setbacks that have plagued their season. If they can keep up this momentum, they may just surprise a few more teams in the Cup and in the league.
