RSC Anderlecht has confirmed that David Hubert will continue as head coach, following a period of speculation regarding his future.
In the last week, current Tottenham Hotspur assistant boss Ryan Mason was linked with the job, but talks broke down and he remained with Spurs. The decision was finalised after a Board of Directors meeting, putting an end to rumours of external candidates being considered for the role. Hubert, 36, who stepped in as interim coach after the sacking of Brian Riemer, has impressed club leadership with his recent results and approach.
“I am very proud of the vote of confidence,” Hubert said after the announcement. The Belgian manager took charge two weeks ago and has since led Anderlecht to promising performances, including a 3-0 victory over Standard and an unexpected Europa League win against Real Sociedad.
Despite these results, external names like Mark van Bommel, Alfred Schreuder and Tottenham’s Ryan Mason had been circulating as potential replacements. Swiss coach Raphael Wicky, previously at Young Boys Bern, was also reportedly in discussions with the club. However, the board has chosen to stick with Hubert, a homegrown option who embodies the “DNA of RSC Anderlecht”.
The club explained their decision in a statement: “Over the past few weeks, the sporting management has held discussions with several candidates in complete serenity. After the last match against Standard, a thorough evaluation was made. The conclusion is now clear: RSC Anderlecht is fully committed to David Hubert as head coach of the first team.”
The appointment marks a commitment to continuity and the club’s philosophy of promoting from within. Jesper Fredberg, Anderlecht’s CEO for Sports, praised Hubert for his impact since taking over. “In recent weeks, we have seen positive signals and a new dynamic within the team. David is a young coach who has seized his chance. He fits with our philosophy of working with talented, modern coaches. We look forward to the rest of the season with optimism.”
Anderlecht’s decision to promote from within aligns with the club’s broader strategy of nurturing young talent, both on the field and within the coaching ranks. Hubert’s rise has been rapid, moving from the U18 squad to the first team in a matter of months. His ability to galvanise the squad in recent matches, combined with his knowledge of the club, proved key in securing the board’s confidence.
In his response, Hubert said, “I am very happy to continue the positive dynamic of the last few weeks. My focus is on seeing progress, day by day and week by week. I believe we can achieve great things together.”
Spurs Man Poor Choice
Some commentators have approved of the decision to keep Hubert in charge, arguing that he is the right man for the job under the current circumstances. Belgian football expert Peter Vandenbempt remarked, “Ryan Mason would have been an English version of Hubert: young and without experience as a head coach. He doesn’t know the players, the competition, or the unique culture at Anderlecht. There was no reason to choose him over Hubert.”
For Anderlecht, this marks a significant commitment to a coach with relatively little experience at the senior level. However, his performance thus far and his deep understanding of the club’s ethos have convinced the board that he is the man to lead them forward.
Site Opinion
The decision to appoint David Hubert as permanent head coach is a sensible one. Anderlecht’s recent results, including a stunning victory in the Europa League, have demonstrated Hubert’s ability to inspire his squad. His promotion from the U18 side signals the club’s belief in homegrown talent, not just in players but in coaching staff as well. At a time when high-profile signings often drive modern football, Anderlecht’s choice to promote from within is refreshing, reinforcing the club’s identity.
Hubert’s lack of senior management experience is undeniable, but his initial results are promising. By opting for continuity, Anderlecht are placing their trust in a coach who knows the players and the system well. This decision may not have the glamour of appointing a big-name manager, but it could prove to be a masterstroke in the long run, as the club looks to build a sustainable future.
