Turkish Side Tracking Leeds United Defender

Leeds United left-back Junior Firpo, currently sidelined with a month-long injury, has reportedly caught the attention of Turkish Super Lig club Besiktas.

According to Turkish outlet Fotospor, Besiktas have been closely monitoring Firpo’s performances this season, even amidst the defender’s recent suspension for an altercation with Millwall’s Danny McNamara.

Besiktas, competing in the Europa League, are believed to be in the market for reinforcements at left-back, with Arthur Masuaku struggling to make an impact in the role. Firpo’s contract with Leeds expires in the summer, allowing him to negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs from January 1. This scenario raises speculation over whether a January move could be on the horizon for the 27-year-old.

Transfer Complications

While Besiktas scouts have reportedly been impressed by Firpo’s technical abilities, concerns linger over his disciplinary record, which might deter sponsors from supporting a potential deal. Firpo’s three-match ban for his confrontation with McNamara is cited as a particular sticking point.

Despite these issues, the Turkish club appears keen on strengthening its defensive options, potentially making Firpo a target as the January window approaches.

Leeds United’s Stance

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has expressed a desire for a quiet January transfer window. However, Firpo’s potential departure would complicate matters for the Championship side, who are aiming for promotion back to the Premier League. Additionally, injuries and squad depth concerns make retaining players like Firpo critical for Leeds’ aspirations.
