La Liga Outfit Ready Fresh Approach For Leeds United Star

La Liga side Real Betis are preparing to reignite their interest in Leeds United striker Mateo Joseph ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Spanish club previously failed with a January bid, but reports suggest they will reopen talks with the newly promoted Premier League side once their season concludes.

Betis Keen On Long-Term Forward Project

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Sevilla-based club explored a move for Joseph during the January window but ultimately turned to MLS forward Cucho Hernandez from Columbus Crew.

Now, with their UEFA Europa Conference League campaign nearing its conclusion, Betis are reportedly planning formal discussions with Leeds United in the coming weeks. Club officials believe Joseph has the technical profile and development potential to thrive in La Liga and view him as a strategic acquisition.

The Spanish youth international, who was born in Spain and came through Espanyol’s academy, is under contract with Leeds until 2028 and played a supporting role in their Championship-winning season.

Previous Bid Rejected But Interest Remains

Leeds United are understood to have turned down a £10 million approach from Betis earlier this year, deeming the offer below the player’s market value — particularly after the Whites failed in a move for Southampton’s Cameron Archer. Joseph went on to make 39 league appearances in 2024/25, scoring three goals and assisting three more as Leeds secured the title and promotion back to the Premier League.

Despite being used primarily as a substitute, his technical quality and pressing ability caught the eye, and Betis are believed to have kept tabs throughout the season.

Joseph, who holds dual nationality, has remained on the club’s radar due to his prior links with Spanish football and his long-term upside as a development player within a top-flight environment.

Negotiations Expected To Be Tough

Any deal will be far from straightforward. Leeds’ promotion to the Premier League has strengthened their negotiating position, and manager Daniel Farke is said to be keen to retain Joseph as part of his attacking rotation. The club are also pursuing a new centre-forward, suggesting Joseph could have a bigger role next season despite limited starts in the Championship.

Betis are nonetheless optimistic that Joseph could be tempted by a return to Spain, particularly if a clear pathway to minutes is presented. A significant offer would likely be required to shift Leeds’ position, with the player’s contract running until 2028.

Site Opinion

For Real Betis, the appeal of Mateo Joseph is obvious — young, technically gifted, and with La Liga roots. He fits the mould of the kind of smart, long-term investments Betis have made in recent years. However, prising him away from a newly promoted Premier League club under stable ownership won’t come cheap.

Unless Leeds shift strategy or Joseph pushes for a return to Spain, this could be one that drags deep into the window. But Betis’ persistence suggests they believe the forward can be a long-term asset — and they’re unlikely to walk away quietly.
