RB Salzburg Eye Swoop For Leeds United Defender

Leeds United defender Max Wober is reportedly a target for Red Bull Salzburg in the upcoming January transfer window, according to a report by Kurier.

The Austrian centre-back, who is currently providing back-up in Leeds United’s defensive ranks, has fallen down the pecking order at Elland Road under manager Daniel Farke. The Whites may have a decision to make about his future as the winter window approaches.

Wober’s Career So Far

The 26-year-old spent last season on loan at Borussia Monchengladbach, where he made 27 appearances across all competitions and scored twice. Upon returning to Leeds this summer, Wober stayed with the squad despite limited opportunities in the Championship this term.

He joined Leeds in January 2023 under then-manager Jesse Marsch but could not prevent the club’s relegation to the second tier. Since his arrival, Wober has made 22 appearances for the club.

Salzburg’s Interest

According to Kurier, Red Bull Salzburg are eager to bring Wober back, having previously tried to sign him in the summer. The Austrian Bundesliga side, currently languishing in 7th place after a disappointing start to the season, see him as a potential solution to bolster their defence.

Wober enjoyed significant success at Salzburg earlier in his career, playing 125 games and scoring nine goals before his move to Leeds. The Vienna-born player has also had spells at Rapid Wien, Ajax, and Sevilla.

What’s Next for Leeds United?

Leeds United are focused on their promotion push as they sit 3rd in the Championship table, behind Sheffield United and Burnley. Manager Daniel Farke’s side aim to bounce back from their recent 1-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers as they host Derby County this weekend.

Moving Wober on in January could free up funds and a squad spot for potential reinforcements. Despite his role as defensive cover, his high wages and limited impact may prompt the Whites to part ways.
