Glasgow Rangers Weigh Up Player Decision Amid Interest

Rangers are yet to decide on the future of defender Ben Davies, with Birmingham City eager to turn his successful loan into a permanent move.

The 29-year-old played a key role in Birmingham’s League One title win, but uncertainty at Ibrox means his situation remains unresolved.

Managerial Vacancy Leaves Davies in Limbo

Davies spent the 2024/25 season on loan at St Andrew’s after falling out of favour under Philippe Clement. He made 44 appearances as Birmingham racked up 111 points and stormed to the League One title.

Despite being surplus to requirements in Glasgow, the defender remains under contract for another 12 months, and his long-term future will now be determined by the incoming Rangers manager.

The club are in the process of identifying Clement’s successor, with Davide Ancelotti and Steven Gerrard among the bookmakers’ favourites. Whoever takes charge will be consulted on Davies’ status before a final decision is made.

Until then, Rangers are in no rush to sanction any permanent exit.

Interest Mounts South of the Border

Birmingham head coach Chris Davies is keen to retain Davies, describing the experienced centre-back as “exceptional” following his standout performances during the promotion campaign.

Davies built a strong partnership alongside Christoph Klarer and impressed with his composure and left-sided balance at the back.

However, the Ibrox hierarchy are aware that interest in Davies extends beyond Birmingham, with several Championship clubs monitoring the situation. The player, who still owns a home in the north-west of England, may attract further offers if the decision is delayed.

Strategic Considerations for Rangers

From a Rangers perspective, Davies represents a valuable asset who could either be integrated back into the squad or sold to help fund the summer rebuild. His wages and remaining contract length give the club flexibility, and the board are determined not to rush into a decision without proper input from their next manager.

Given the number of changes expected at Ibrox this summer, including possible departures elsewhere in defence, keeping all options open with Davies is a pragmatic approach.

Site Opinion

Rangers are right to take their time over Ben Davies. While he may not have featured prominently under Philippe Clement, a new manager could see his value differently. With a year left on his deal and interest growing from the English Championship, the club hold the cards.

Davies’ form at Birmingham shows he still has plenty to offer — and whether as part of the squad or a potential source of transfer revenue, his future must be decided with care. For now, patience remains the best policy.
