Hertha BSC emerged victorious in a pulsating 4-3 encounter against 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the 2. Bundesliga.
Kaiserslautern’s coach, Markus Anfang, made four changes to the side that had secured a 1-0 win in Münster, while Cristian Fiel had to reshuffle his defence following the departure of Kempf to Como Calcio. Marton Dardai and Cuisance were brought into the lineup, with Winkler dropping to the bench.
The match began with both teams showing plenty of intent and energy. Kaiserslautern were the quicker to settle, creating early chances through Klement and Hanslik within the first eight minutes. Hertha took a bit longer to find their rhythm, struggling with erratic play, but gradually began to threaten, particularly through Karbownik and Scherhant.
It was Hertha who struck first, however, with a well-worked goal in the 28th minute. A slick move down the right saw Gechter release Kenny, whose pinpoint cross found Schuler unmarked in the box. Schuler made no mistake, heading home to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
But the advantage was short-lived. Just four minutes later, Kaiserslautern responded in style. A corner kick led to a scramble in the box, and Tomiak’s header found Klement, who curled a sublime shot into the far corner to level the scores.
The match then turned into a frantic end-to-end contest. Kaiserslautern’s Ritter tested Hertha goalkeeper Ernst with a fierce free-kick, and Opoku came close with a follow-up effort. At the other end, Hertha threatened through Scherhant and Gechter, but it was Kaiserslautern who took the lead just before the break. A miscommunication between Gechter and Demme led to Hanslik pouncing on a loose ball, setting up Opoku to finish off the inside of the post and make it 2-1.
The second half began with Hertha on the front foot, and they quickly equalised. Dardai’s pass released Karbownik, who set up Scherhant to slot home from a tight angle and bring the score to 2-2. The game continued at a frenetic pace, and Hertha reclaimed the lead in the 64th minute when Schuler grabbed his second of the match.
However, the drama was far from over. Just four minutes later, Opoku’s cross found Tomiak at the back post, and his header, helped by Ernst’s shoulder and the underside of the crossbar, made it 3-3.
In a game where either side could have snatched victory, it was Hertha who had the final say. Despite Kaiserslautern’s late chances, including misses by Opoku and substitute Ache, it was Cuisance who settled the contest in the 79th minute. His shot, following a corner, was deflected into the net after Ache’s attempted clearance fell kindly to him.
Reflecting on the match, Kaiserslautern’s Marlon Ritter said: “For the neutral spectator, it was a very nice Saturday evening and for us it could have been one too if we hadn’t conceded so many easy goals. We didn’t take advantage of the chances up front as we might be used to, so at the end of a good game you end up with no points.”
The defeat leaves both sides in the middle of the pack in the early league table.
