Speculation continues to swirl around Sheffield Wednesday’s head coach Danny Röhl, with the German tactician now reportedly in contention for a Bundesliga role at Hamburger SV.
Röhl, who has been lauded for his transformative work at Hillsborough, is considered one of the brightest managerial prospects in football today.
According to German publication Kicker, Röhl is being considered as a replacement for Steffen Baumgart, who was dismissed by Hamburger SV last month. However, it is also reported that interim manager Merlin Polzin might retain the position on a permanent basis, with other names such as Bruno Labbadia and Henrik Rydström also under consideration.
Speaking of Röhl, Kicker noted: “According to Kicker information, Danny Röhl is also on the list. The Zwickau native has been working successfully in England for around a year. In October 2023, Röhl took over Sheffield Wednesday in the relegation battle in the English second division, initially saving it and then stabilising it in the current season. The club is the first head coaching position for the 35-year-old with an interesting CV so far.”
They also highlighted Röhl’s illustrious coaching journey, adding, “Röhl worked at RB Leipzig under Ralf Rangnick and Ralph Hasenhüttl, assisted Hansi Flick after his move to FC Bayern and also served under the current Barcelona coach during his time as national coach. After leaving the DFB in autumn last year, Röhl moved to the UK, where his successful work automatically brought him into the spotlight – apparently also at HSV.”
With a critical fixture against Stoke City looming this weekend, Sheffield Wednesday supporters are eager to hear Röhl’s thoughts on these reports. His commitment to the Owls could prove pivotal as the club looks to maintain its upward trajectory.

Danny Röhl’s rise through the coaching ranks is nothing short of remarkable. At just 35 years of age, he has demonstrated a tactical acumen and leadership quality that sets him apart in modern football. His achievements with Sheffield Wednesday, particularly saving them from relegation and building a stable team, have understandably made him a target for clubs with greater resources and ambitions.
However, the allure of the Bundesliga and a club like Hamburger SV could be difficult to resist. While Wednesday fans will hope to see him stay and build on his promising work, speculation like this often suggests a crossroads in a manager’s career. Whether Röhl remains at Hillsborough or takes the leap back to Germany, it’s clear his future in football management is exceedingly bright.
