Former Liverpool Man Dismisses Talks Of England Return

Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has dismissed rumours of a winter transfer to Sunderland, making it clear he intends to remain at Ajax.

The 34-year-old midfielder, who captained his team to a 3-0 victory over Almere City FC on Sunday, reaffirmed his commitment to the Eredivisie club while reflecting on his boyhood connection to Sunderland.

“It’s My Club”

Speaking to ESPN after the game, Henderson addressed the speculation linking him to the Championship side. “It’s my club, ever since I was a boy of six or seven. I was in the stands,” he said, acknowledging his lifelong connection to Sunderland, who remain in the race for promotion this season.

“But I just hope I stay here. I really like it here. I want to help the club to grow further. We are taking those steps. But I have read it too. I don’t even know where all this came from because there has been no contact,” Henderson emphasised.

Henderson, whose contract with Ajax runs until mid-2026, has been a key figure for the team this season. His performance against Almere City included a standout assist for Kenneth Taylor, showcasing the veteran’s enduring quality.

Who Is Jordan Henderson?

Henderson began his football journey with Sunderland’s youth academy at the age of eight. He progressed through the ranks and made his first-team debut in November 2008. To gain more experience, Henderson spent six months on loan at Coventry City in 2009 before returning to Sunderland, where he became a regular starter.

In June 2011, Henderson transferred to Liverpool. He won his first trophy with the club, the League Cup, in 2012. Following Steven Gerrard’s departure, Henderson was appointed Liverpool captain in 2015. Under his leadership, Liverpool secured several major titles, including the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup in 2019. In 2020, he led the team to their first Premier League title in 30 years and was named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year. In 2022, Henderson added the FA Cup and EFL Cup to his list of achievements, with Liverpool defeating Chelsea on penalties in both finals.

After a brief stint with Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia in 2023, Henderson joined Ajax in 2024, where he currently serves as captain. Internationally, he has earned over 80 caps for England since his debut in 2010, participating in multiple UEFA European Championships and FIFA World Cups. Notably, he is the first player to win the England Player of the Year award at both the U-21 and senior levels.

What’s Next for Henderson?

While the rumours linking Henderson with a return to Sunderland may persist, his commitment to Ajax remains steadfast. With his contract extending until 2026 and his performances continuing to impress, Henderson is clearly focused on helping Ajax achieve their goals this season.
