Ajax Target New Deal For 21-Year-Old Sensation

Ajax has officially begun discussions to secure a new contract for 21-year-old central defender Youri Baas, aiming to extend his current deal beyond 2026.

Recognised as one of this season’s standout players, Baas has been informed by Ajax’s technical director, Alex Kroes, that the club is keen to retain his services for a longer term. Ajax also seeks to avoid a scenario where Baas, now a regular in the first team, nears the end of his contract without clarity on his future.

This move is part of Ajax’s broader strategy to secure long-term agreements with key players well in advance. The club is currently negotiating with Steven Berghuis and Devyne Rensch, both of whom are approaching the final year of their contracts. By initiating these discussions early, Ajax management hopes to avoid similar situations in the coming seasons, with additional contract renewals anticipated early in the new year.

Youri Baas is the first player to benefit from this proactive approach, a turn of events that seemed unlikely just last spring. Baas’s future with Ajax appeared uncertain at that time after spending a season primarily playing as a left winger and reserve on loan at NEC Nijmegen. However, this summer saw a remarkable transformation as Ajax’s head coach, Francesco Farioli, tested him as a central defender during pre-season. Baas took full advantage of the opportunity, and despite a recent slip-up against FC Twente, he has emerged as one of the club’s most promising talents in a season that has seen Ajax strive for resurgence.

Baas began his football journey with OVV before joining the youth team at Excelsior in 2012. His progression saw him join Ajax’s youth academy in 2017, leading to his debut with Jong Ajax in 2020 in a match against De Graafschap. In 2021, Baas signed a contract extension with Ajax, committing him to the club until 2024. He spent the 2023–24 season on loan at NEC Nijmegen, gaining valuable experience before returning to Amsterdam.

Ajax’s proactive approach with Youri Baas reflects a club seeking stability amidst a challenging season. Offering a longer contract to an emerging young talent is a positive move, especially as Baas has demonstrated versatility and determination to seize his central defensive role. By investing in Baas, Ajax sends a clear signal that they are committed to building a team around promising, homegrown players, hoping to cultivate future stars from within their ranks.

However, Ajax must also consider their broader strategy. With several players’ contracts nearing expiration, it’s imperative the club aligns long-term planning with player development to prevent disruptive contract uncertainties. Should Baas continue to excel, Ajax may benefit not only on the pitch but also in solidifying a foundation that can carry the team forward in the coming seasons, setting a benchmark for managing young talents at top European clubs.
