Freyr Alexandersson has confirmed he will remain head coach of KV Kortrijk, quashing rumours linking him to a potential move to Cardiff City.
Despite speculation, Alexandersson has decided to remain in Belgium. Rebuking the rumours, he stated, “I am not in talks with Cardiff, and a departure is not on the agenda.” He emphasized his commitment to working with the club’s fans, players, and staff to secure KVK’s future. Cardiff City, currently struggling at the bottom of the Championship, had reportedly considered Alexandersson as a leading candidate after dismissing coach Erol Bulut.

It was revealed that Alexandersson did visit Wales last week for negotiations, though he informed his Kortrijk players that his absence was due to illness. Cardiff ultimately went in a different direction, but the Icelandic coach’s candidacy reflected his growing reputation in management. Appointed at Kortrijk in January 2024, Alexandersson took on the difficult task of rescuing the club from relegation, a challenge he succeeded in via the Relegation Play-Offs, reviving the team and its support base.
In a direct response to the transfer speculation, Alexandersson took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), where he dismissed the rumours, stating, “The only lies are the ones in that article. Would never set up this kind of scenario. Thanks for your support.” His response was aimed at clarifying his position and assuring fans that his focus remains on Kortrijk.
Dear Arne. The only lies are the ones in that article. Would never set up this kind of scenario.

However, the start of this season has been less than smooth for the Icelandic coach. A string of questionable decisions, including benching popular goalkeeper Marko Vandenberghe and parting ways with goalkeeping coach Glenn Verbauwhede, created friction within the club. With Kortrijk’s underwhelming performance so far this season—eight points from 24—the relationship between Alexandersson and the fans has been strained. His brief flirtation with Cardiff added to the tension, but now his focus turns to reigniting the club’s form, beginning with a crucial match against Union next weekend.
Alexandersson was also linked with a move to Union during the summer, though that opportunity fell through when he was denied the chance to bring his assistant, Jonathan Hartmann, with him. Union ultimately opted for Sébastien Pocognoli as their manager, leaving Alexandersson to continue his work at Kortrijk. Now, as Kortrijk prepares to face Union, the spotlight remains firmly on the Icelandic coach and whether he can steer the team back on course.

Site Opinion – A Time for Rebuilding
Freyr Alexandersson’s decision to stay at KV Kortrijk is the right one at this stage of the season. Although tempting, a move to Cardiff City, a club in turmoil, may have risked his reputation after the great work he’s done in keeping Kortrijk afloat. His commitment to staying shows a level of dedication that could win back fans who have grown frustrated in recent months.
However, Alexandersson faces a tough road ahead. His relationship with the supporters has been strained by the team’s poor start to the season, and recent controversies haven’t helped. If he can guide Kortrijk to some vital wins in the coming weeks, particularly against Union, he could reignite the optimism that once surrounded his appointment.
