Former Port Vale Man Sacked By Welsh Outfit

Newtown AFC has officially parted ways with first-team manager Scott Ruscoe after a challenging start to the season.

The decision comes on the heels of a goalless draw with Bala Town in the Cymru Premier and an early Welsh Cup exit, where Newtown was knocked out by Llanuwchllyn on penalties. Ruscoe’s stint lasted just ten months, during which he oversaw 28 matches, recording eight wins, six draws, and 14 defeats.

In a statement posted on social media, Newtown AFC expressed their gratitude: “Newtown AFC can confirm that first team Manager Scott Ruscoe has left the club, with immediate effect. We would like to thank Scott for all of his hard work and dedication during his time with our club, and wish him all the very best for the future.”

Ruscoe, a former Newtown player, returned to Welsh football in January after managing Port Vale’s under-18s team. Though well-regarded for his success at TNS, where he lifted the league title nine times as a player and twice as manager, his time at Newtown has proven less fruitful, with the team currently positioned ninth in the league.

Callum McKenzie Appointed Interim Manager

Following Ruscoe’s departure, Callum McKenzie, a familiar face at Newtown, has been appointed to take charge on an interim basis. McKenzie, who holds a UEFA A Licence, has served in various roles at the club, including a recent position as technical director overseeing the academy. A former Newtown player himself, McKenzie has a wealth of experience, including coaching stints at Cardiff City, Everton, and Shrewsbury Town’s academy.

McKenzie temporarily managed the team earlier this year after Chris Hughes departed, although that fixture ended in a 3-1 defeat. Known for his deep ties to the club and technical expertise, McKenzie will aim to steady the squad as they prepare for a critical upcoming fixture.

A Season of Managerial Shake-Ups in the Cymru Premier

This latest departure marks the third managerial change in the Cymru Premier this season. In August, Connah’s Quay replaced Neil Gibson with Billy Paynter, and Aberystwyth Town is still searching for a permanent manager following Anthony ‘Taff’ Williams’ departure. Dave Taylor currently serves as caretaker at Aberystwyth.

Newtown’s next test comes against another managerless side, Aberystwyth Town, at Park Avenue on Friday, November 8, in what is sure to be a pivotal match for both clubs as they seek stability and a fresh direction in the league.
