Wolfsburg Striker Under Fire for Refusing to Sign Rainbow Shirt, Issues Apology

Wolfsburg striker Kevin Behrens has become embroiled in controversy following reports that he refused to sign a rainbow-themed shirt during an internal club event.

The specially designed jersey, featuring the Wolfsburg and Volkswagen logos with rainbow accents, was part of a charity auction supporting diversity and inclusion. According to Bold.dk, Behrens allegedly remarked, “I’m not signing that gay shit,” shocking those present at the event.

The club has since confirmed the incident, with Wolfsburg stating: “During an internal session, remarks were made that were not in line with the stance of VfL Wolfsburg. The incident was immediately dealt with internally. VfL Wolfsburg emphasises that it is aware of its social responsibility. The club and its employees stand for diversity and tolerance, and fundamental values such as respect, honesty and openness have always been firmly anchored in the club’s philosophy.”

While the striker’s comments drew significant backlash, German Media reported that Behrens eventually signed the shirts despite his earlier refusal.

Apology Issued but Consequences Unclear

Kevin Behrens, who has seen limited playing time this season, later issued a public apology, admitting that his “spontaneous comments were absolutely not OK.” He added, “I would like to apologise for that. The issue was clearly discussed internally and I ask for your understanding that I do not want to comment on it any further.” Despite the public apology, the extent of any disciplinary action taken against Behrens remains unclear. The striker was seen on the bench during Wolfsburg’s recent 3-1 victory over Bochum, suggesting that no immediate sporting consequences have followed the incident.

Although the club has addressed the matter internally, there is no confirmation whether Behrens will face any further sanctions. His current contract with Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg runs until July next year, and it is yet to be seen whether this controversy will impact his future with the club.

Site Opinion

In the world of professional sports, where athletes are increasingly seen as public figures and role models, incidents like Behrens’ refusal to sign the rainbow shirt raise important questions. Regardless of his personal beliefs, Behrens’ role as a representative of Wolfsburg should compel him to uphold the club’s values of diversity and inclusivity. His initial comments, which have been widely condemned, do not align with these principles.

However, it is encouraging that Behrens recognised the inappropriateness of his remarks and issued an apology. That being said, an apology alone may not be enough to repair the damage caused. Clubs like Wolfsburg, known for their commitment to social responsibility, must decide how to handle such situations in a way that promotes tolerance and respect within their teams and the wider community.
