Vienna’s Sides Keep Up Pressure On Austrian Leaders Sturm Graz

In the Styrian derby, defending champions Sturm Graz showcased their determination, edging Hartberg 2-1 to maintain their lead in the Bundesliga.

With 29 points, Sturm sits three points clear of Rapid Vienna, whose 2-0 victory over Austria Klagenfurt on Sunday reaffirmed their position as the league’s main challengers.

After the win, Rapid coach Robert Klauß expressed optimism about his team’s standing: “Twenty-six points is good. It looks quite good that we can put ourselves in a good position to split the points.” Rapid’s performance has been consistent, especially at their home fortress, the Allianz Stadium, where they have remained unbeaten in 11 home games, achieving nine wins and two draws.

Despite an early exit from the Austrian Cup in the round of 16 against Stripfing/Weiden, Klauß remains upbeat about the team’s potential. “This has given us a lot of self-confidence. Things are going well in the Conference League, where we have had the best results. Unfortunately, we were knocked out of the cup, which is a pain. We want to play optimally again in the next phase until Christmas and score as many points as possible,” he stated.

Austria Wien’s Resilience and Grit

Austria Wien also capitalised on their momentum, marking their fifth straight Bundesliga win with a scrappy 1-0 triumph over RZ Pellets WAC. Head coach Stephan Helm acknowledged the grinding nature of the victory: “We had to eat dirt in Wolfsberg,” he admitted. However, he emphasised that resilience in tough matches is also a testament to quality, saying, “That is also quality.”

Saturday’s game saw former WAC player Maurice Malone score the decisive goal in the 56th minute, despite Austria Wien’s limited shots on target. Goalkeeper Samuel Sahin-Radlinger described the victory as a “dirty work and mentality win,” reflecting the team’s commitment to securing points even in challenging circumstances.

Champions Sturm Graz Demonstrate Grit in Close Matches

Sturm Graz’s manager Christian Ilzer commended his side for their resilience after the 2-1 victory over Hartberg, stating, “It is an achievement that cannot be underestimated to win here in Hartberg after such an intensive programme. The boys can be proud of themselves.” With 16 out of a possible 18 points from the last six games, Sturm Graz heads into the international break as league leaders, undeterred by the pressure from Vienna’s rising clubs.

In the race for the Bundesliga title, the determined pursuit by SK Rapid and Austria Wien has injected fresh excitement into the season. Rapid’s robust home form and Austria Wien’s gritty away performances showcase the different but equally effective approaches each team is bringing to the table. Robert Klauß’s Rapid boasts a youthful lineup, adapting impressively to challenges, especially at home. Austria Wien, with Helm’s philosophy of resilience, continues to thrive even in “dirty” games, proving their ability to handle the season’s ups and downs.

As we look to the second half of the season, Sturm Graz may find their lead under pressure as the Viennese clubs continue to build momentum. With both Rapid and Austria Wien performing well on different fronts, the competition promises to keep fans on the edge of their seats. Whether Sturm can hold off this Vienna resurgence will be a compelling storyline for Bundesliga followers in the weeks to come.
