Sporting CP Star Makes Premier League Confession

Conrad Harder joined Sporting Lisbon this summer from Danish club Nordsjaelland, but has admitted he also had Premier League interest.

Harder moved to Portugal in a transfer worth €18 million. Just two months and five matches into his time with the Portuguese side, Harder disclosed in an interview with the Swedish press that he had other offers, including from Premier League clubs, before committing to Sporting.

In an interview with Tipsbladet during his call-up to Denmark’s under-21 national team, the 19-year-old forward revealed, “There was some dialogue with Brighton, but I felt Sporting was more appealing for me. They had a better plan, and that formed the basis of my decision.”

However, Portugal’s allure simply overwhelmed the possibility of moving to England’s south coast.

Harder further elaborated on his move: “It’s a big change, but I felt ready. When the opportunity presented itself, I couldn’t say no. It was a very attractive offer, and there are many positive things to say about Sporting. They’re a massive club, performing well both domestically and in European competitions. It’s always been a dream of mine to move abroad, and I achieved that at 19.”

The young striker also shared how influential Sporting captain Morten Hjulmand was in his decision. Harder revealed that shortly after making his debut, he was invited to dinner at Hjulmand’s home and had spoken to the captain over the phone before finalising the transfer.

However, fame has come quickly for Harder in his new surroundings. Standing out due to his height and Nordic looks, he’s often recognised on the streets of Lisbon: “When I first arrived, I thought I could just walk around as I pleased. But I’ve found I can’t go anywhere without a cap and sunglasses. I don’t mind; everyone is really kind and respectful, but it’s something I’m still adjusting to,” he admitted.

Reflecting on his time at Nordsjaelland, Harder said, “When an offer of that size comes in, it’s tough for a club like Nordsjaelland to say no. I had just signed a contract there and was very happy, but when Sporting approached me, it was hard to turn them down. It’s been a whirlwind since then, especially after making my Champions League debut.”

The decision to join Sporting Lisbon over Brighton may turn out to be a masterstroke for Conrad Harder. While the Premier League is undoubtedly alluring, Sporting’s track record of nurturing young talent speaks for itself. The club has long been a launchpad for stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes, and Harder could be next in line for success. In choosing a club that prioritises his development, Harder is setting himself up for a promising future.

However, moving to Portugal so young comes with its challenges, particularly adjusting to the new pressures and expectations. Harder’s quick recognition on the streets hints at the intensity of the spotlight he’s now under. If he continues to impress, both domestically and on the European stage, this experience in Lisbon could well shape him into the well-rounded player Brighton, and other suitors, may come knocking for once again.
