The announcement of Rúben Amorim’s possible departure from Sporting CP to Manchester United has stirred discontent within the squad.
Amorim, a pivotal figure in Sporting’s ambitions, confirmed that United is willing to pay his release clause, sparking unease and frustration among players, especially those persuaded to stay at the club due to his leadership and the promise of successive championship wins.
“An Elephant in the Room”: Amorim Addresses the Rumours
News of Manchester United’s interest surfaced before Sporting’s recent match against Nacional, catching the squad off guard. Some players, particularly key figures like Viktor Gyökeres and Oliver Hjulmand, reportedly felt let down, as they had turned down offers from other clubs over the summer to stay with Sporting’s championship project under Amorim. Amorim acknowledged the tense atmosphere in a post-match press conference, saying he had to address “the elephant in the room” during training, as the speculation distracted the players. It’s a phrase he also used when linked with West Ham last season.
In the same interview, Amorim admitted the disappointment this potential exit would bring to his team, drawing parallels to his previous departure from Braga. “My players will be disappointed with me if I leave, but it’s part of life,” he said.
Sporting’s Attempts to Delay the Move
Sporting president Frederico Varandas is actively working to delay Amorim’s departure at least until after the upcoming match against Estrela da Amadora. The club hopes to prolong negotiations, aiming to keep the Portuguese manager in Lisbon for a little longer as they brace for a transition.
For the players, the uncertainty surrounding Amorim’s position only adds to the disruption. Swedish forward Viktor Gyökeres shared his thoughts after the Nacional game, stating, “He’s here, and that’s what I’m focused on. Let’s see what happens.” However, the forward’s remarks reflect the underlying worry within the squad.
Site Opinion: The Cost of Losing Amorim Mid-Season
If Amorim departs for Manchester United, Sporting CP faces more than a managerial vacancy; they risk losing the cohesion and commitment Amorim fostered within his squad. For players like Gyökeres and Hjulmand, Amorim’s departure would feel like a broken promise, as both stayed to work with the coach on a multi-year championship project.
For Sporting, prolonging Amorim’s stay until at least January would provide much-needed time to prepare and perhaps identify a successor. However, without concrete assurances, Sporting’s players may struggle with morale and performance, as their coach’s uncertain future casts a shadow over the season.
