The race for promotion in Serie B intensified over the weekend as Pisa, Spezia, and Sassuolo all secured important victories, while Palermo faltered in a thrilling 2-2 draw with Modena.
As the competition heats up, these teams are starting to assert their dominance, pushing ahead in the league table.
Pisa Fight Back to Beat Sudtirol 2-1
Pisa continued their impressive form under coach Filippo Inzaghi with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Sudtirol. After a cagey opening 30 minutes, the home side took the lead through Fabian Tait in the 29th minute, capitalising on a defensive mistake by Caracciolo. However, Pisa responded quickly, equalising 10 minutes later when Danish midfielder Magnus Lind finished off a well-placed pass from Hojholt.
In the second half, Pisa took control of the match and earned a penalty in the 57th minute. Arena coolly converted from the spot to put the visitors ahead. Sudtirol pressed for an equaliser but were denied by Pisa goalkeeper Semper, who produced a stunning save in the 88th minute to preserve his side’s lead. Pisa now sit eight points clear of fourth place, maintaining their push for promotion with 22 points.
Spezia Defeat Salernitana 2-0
Spezia also continued their charge at the top of the table, securing a 2-0 away win against Salernitana. A cagey first half saw few chances, with Spezia threatening from set pieces but failing to break through. However, the match came to life in the 55th minute when Edoardo Soleri produced a spectacular overhead kick to give the visitors the lead.
Spezia doubled their advantage just 18 minutes later when Bertola headed home from an Esposito corner, securing the three points. The Ligurian side remain unbeaten in Serie B and are now just three points behind Pisa with 19 points, putting pressure on the league leaders.
Sassuolo Thrash Brescia 5-2
Sassuolo were in scintillating form as they thrashed Brescia 5-2 away at the Rigamonti Stadium. The visitors made a lightning start, with Daniel Boloca firing them ahead in just the third minute. Brescia responded well and equalised through youngster Fogliata in the 20th minute, who scored his first Serie B goal with a stunning volley.
However, Sassuolo took control in the second half. Volpato restored their lead with a superb left-footed strike into the top corner, and two minutes later, Laurientè made it 3-1 with a deflected effort. Sassuolo’s relentless pressure paid off as Iannoni added a fourth goal in the 81st minute, assisted by substitute Domenico Berardi. Brescia pulled one back through Bjarnason, but Sassuolo had the final say when Pierini scored their fifth in stoppage time.
Sassuolo’s fourth win in five matches puts them third in the table with 18 points, continuing their strong start to the season under coach Fabio Grosso.
Palermo Squander Lead in 2-2 Draw with Modena
Palermo will rue missed opportunities after letting a 2-0 lead slip in a dramatic 2-2 draw with Modena at the Braglia Stadium. The visitors took the lead in the 35th minute when Verre fired home a left-footed strike after Di Francesco’s cross. Moments later, Palermo had a golden opportunity to extend their advantage when they were awarded a penalty, but Henry’s effort was saved by Gagno.
Despite the missed penalty, Palermo doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time when Insigne produced a moment of brilliance, controlling the ball with his right foot before unleashing a powerful left-footed strike.
Modena came out fighting in the second half, with striker Gliozzi pulling one back in the 48th minute, converting Bozhanaj’s volley with an audacious backheel. The home side continued to press, and in the 85th minute, Caldara scored the equaliser, heading home Palumbo’s cross to complete the comeback. Palermo had to settle for a point, missing the chance to close the gap on the top teams.
Cittadella Held to 0-0 by Cosenza
Elsewhere, Cittadella were left frustrated after a goalless draw against Cosenza, despite playing most of the match with a man advantage. Cosenza’s Venturi was sent off in the 37th minute for a foul on Rabbi, leaving his side to defend resolutely for over 50 minutes. Cittadella created several chances but lacked precision in the final third, with Desogus and Vita both missing clear opportunities early in the match.
Cittadella thought they had snatched a late winner in the 94th minute when Pavan found the back of the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review. The match ended 0-0, with Cosenza securing a valuable point despite their numerical disadvantage.
