Napoli’s grip on the Serie A title loosened on Sunday as they were held to a 2-2 draw by a spirited Genoa side at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.
With just two matches remaining, the result leaves the league leaders only one point ahead of Inter Milan, who earlier saw off Torino in tough conditions.
Hosts start well
The hosts started well when Scott McTominay’s pinpoint delivery was expertly converted by Romelu Lukaku in the 15th minute. However, Genoa hit back shortly after the half-hour mark when Honest Ahanor’s header forced a reaction save from Alex Meret, only for the ball to rebound off the Napoli goalkeeper and into the net.
Napoli looked to have regained control in the second half when Giacomo Raspadori smashed home from close range in the 64th minute. But Johan Vásquez rose highest to head in a dramatic late equaliser six minutes from time, silencing the home crowd and throwing the title race into chaos.
Earlier in the day, Inter Milan kept their championship hopes alive with a professional 2-0 win away at Torino. Despite fielding a rotated squad after midweek European exertions, Simone Inzaghi’s men took an early lead through Nicola Zalewski, who cut inside before rifling home after 14 minutes.
The match endured multiple interruptions due to severe weather, including thunderstorms and a pitch inspection at half-time. But Inter showed composure amid the chaos. Mehdi Taremi won a penalty early in the second half following a foul by Torino goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, and Kristjan Asllani coolly converted from the spot.

From Genoa’s perspective, Sunday’s result was a moment of pride and resilience. Johan Vásquez’s late equaliser not only earned his side a precious point but also showcased Genoa’s fighting spirit on one of Italian football’s biggest stages. With Napoli pushing for the title, few expected Alberto Gilardino’s men to mount such a stubborn challenge, but they did so with determination and quality.
Performances like this underline the growth within Genoa’s squad this season and will give their supporters plenty of belief heading into the final weeks. Whether or not their role as spoilers influences the title destination, this was a night they will remember fondly.
