Former Leicester City midfielder Dennis Praet is joining Belgian side Antwerp, turning down former club Anderlecht, according to a report by Voetbalkrant.
The 30-year-old looks likely to return to his old club, turning down a move to Burnley despite interest from several Premier League clubs, including Fulham, Ipswich Town, and Wolves. Anderlecht, his former club, are also thought to be monitoring the situation with a view to a late bid, but Antwerp appears to be his final destination. Talks between the two parties are ongoing, but no agreement has been reached as of yet.
Praet is also considering other offers, including renewed interest from Anderlecht, who contacted him earlier in the transfer window. While Praet initially hoped for a return to Serie A, no suitable offers have materialised, making a return to the Belgian Pro League an increasingly attractive option as he looks to reach peak fitness.
He emerged as a key player for Anderlecht early in his career, making his first-team debut in 2011 and soon became a key figure in the squad. His technical ability and vision in midfield helped the club secure back-to-back Pro League titles. By 2014, he was a pivotal player in Anderlecht’s pursuit of a third consecutive league crown. His standout performances were recognised with the Belgian Golden Shoe in 2015, awarded to the best player in the Pro League.
Praet’s time at Anderlecht saw him make over 100 appearances, scoring crucial goals in both domestic and European competitions. His ability to deliver in key moments, such as scoring in the Champions League and decisive play-off matches, further solidified his reputation.
By 2016, Praet’s success in Belgium paved the way for a move to Serie A with Sampdoria, where he continued to impress. He enjoyed three seasons in Serie A before joining Premier League side Leicester City in 2019, where he struggled with injuries. After a loan spell at Torino, he returned to Leicester and helped the club secure the EFL Championship in the 2023–24 season before departing the club this summer.

For Antwerp, the need for reinforcements is clear. The club operates with a thin squad, leaving them short of options in key areas. Praet’s potential arrival would enhance the quality of their midfield and provide much-needed depth.
However, Antwerp are 11th in the table, Anderlecht second, and there’s the European football element as well. The Great Old did not qualify for Europe this season, finishing sixth in 23/24, denying them the chance of European football. However, the Purple and Whites are in the Europa League, facing the likes of Real Sociedad and Porto in the group stages.
If they do mount a late challenge for Praet’s signature, that could be crucial.
