PSV Eindhoven Star Reflects on Barcelona Tenure: “Xavi Wasn’t Always Honest”

PSV Eindhoven player Sergiño Dest has opened up about his time at FC Barcelona, expressing disappointment in his working relationship with then-manager Xavi Hernández.

The American international, still recovering from a knee injury, claims that the former Barcelona coach was not entirely transparent about his role within the team. The 23-year-old joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2020, making 72 appearances for the Catalan giants. Initially thriving under Ronald Koeman, where he played 53 matches, Dest’s playing time dwindled after Xavi took over, managing just 18 appearances under the new regime.

In a candid interview with the Spanish daily Sport, Dest shared his feelings of frustration during his time at the club. “I don’t feel like I had a fair chance with Xavi,” Dest said. He explained how Xavi’s tactical preferences stifled his style: “I was limited in my game, which meant I couldn’t be myself. I wanted to play in an attacking way, which is my greatest strength, but I was asked not to push forward too much.”

Looking back on their relationship, Dest also shared that Xavi’s communications left him feeling misled. “I don’t think Xavi has always been honest with me. We’ve had several conversations, and before he went on holiday in the summer of 2022, he told me, ‘I’m counting on you, don’t believe what’s said in the media.’ But when he came back, he suddenly told me, ‘You can leave.'”

Dest admitted disappointment in how his Barcelona career ended, believing he could have contributed more to the team. “It’s a shame it had to end like this, because I felt I could be of value to the squad. But when a new coach comes in with different ideas, there’s not always much you can do to change that.” Dest was eventually loaned to AC Milan before PSV Eindhoven signed him permanently in the summer of 2023.

Who is Sergiño Dest?

Dest began his professional football career with Ajax, making his debut in the 2019-2020 season. A product of the famed Ajax youth academy, Dest quickly established himself as a dynamic and versatile defender known for his speed, technical ability, and offensive prowess. In his debut season with Ajax’s first team, he made 35 appearances across all competitions, catching the attention of major European clubs with his performances both in the Eredivisie and the UEFA Champions League.

In October 2020, Dest made a high-profile move to FC Barcelona, becoming the first American player to represent the Catalan giants in a competitive match. His first season under manager Ronald Koeman was largely positive, with Dest featuring regularly in both domestic and European competitions. He showcased his attacking instincts, contributing with crucial assists and goals, including scoring his first La Liga goal in a 6–1 win over Real Sociedad.

However, after Koeman’s departure and the appointment of Xavi Hernández as Barcelona’s manager, Dest’s role in the team diminished. Xavi’s tactical preferences, which demanded more defensive discipline, limited Dest’s playing opportunities, and he struggled to adapt to the new system. In 2022, he was loaned to AC Milan, where he gained some playing time but failed to secure a permanent role.

In the summer of 2023, Dest completed a permanent transfer to PSV Eindhoven, where he looks to reignite his career and recapture the form that initially made him one of the most promising young full-backs in European football.

Dest’s reflections on his time at Barcelona highlight the difficult realities many players face when a club undergoes a managerial shift. Xavi, a Barcelona legend, brought a distinct vision to the club upon his arrival, which didn’t align with the skillset of all players, especially those like Dest who thrive in more attacking roles. While some may see Dest’s frustrations as understandable, it also raises questions about how clear communication from managers can affect a player’s confidence and performance.

It’s important to note that while Xavi’s managerial methods may seem harsh, they are often part of the competitive nature of elite football. However, handling sensitive conversations with players in a more transparent and respectful manner can prevent misunderstandings and preserve relationships for the future.
