Benfica’s hopes of extending their winning run to seven games across all competitions were dashed as Feyenoord delivered a commanding 3-1 victory at Estadio da Luz.
Antoni Milambo starred with two goals, while Ayase Ueda also found the back of the net for the Dutch side, who moved level with Benfica on six points after three Champions League matchdays.
Early Breakthrough for Feyenoord
Feyenoord’s early intent was clear when Igor Paixao delivered a precise cut-back for Japan international Ayase Ueda to calmly slot home after just 12 minutes. Although Ueda’s second strike was ruled out by VAR, the visitors quickly doubled their lead in the 33rd minute. Milambo outsmarted veteran defender Nicolas Otamendi before finishing coolly, leaving Benfica with a two-goal deficit at half-time.
Benfica’s Fightback
Benfica, winners of their first two Champions League matches, fought back in the second half. Timon Wellenreuther, Feyenoord’s goalkeeper, could only parry Jan-Niklas Beste’s shot, allowing Kerem Akturkoglu to capitalise from close range and bring the hosts back into contention.
However, despite Benfica’s relentless push for an equaliser, including several strong attempts that were thwarted by Wellenreuther’s smart saves, Milambo ended the contest in stoppage time with his second goal, securing a crucial win for the Eredivisie champions.
Milambo’s brace not only ended Benfica’s six-match winning streak but also made him the first Feyenoord player to score twice in a Champions League away match since Jon Dahl Tomasson’s double against Lazio in 2000. Feyenoord’s win also marked their first consecutive away victories in the competition since 1971, highlighting their impressive form.
Analyst Praise for Feyenoord’s Dominant Display
Former Feyenoord player Pierre van Hooijdonk heaped praise on the team’s performance, calling their display “out of this world” during his analysis for Ziggo Sport. “I enjoyed a really impressive Feyenoord,” Van Hooijdonk said, referencing how well the midfield trio of Milambo, Quinten Timber, and Hwang performed. “They are continuing the momentum from Girona. This was truly exceptional.”
Van Hooijdonk noted the significant improvement in the squad since their defeat to Leverkusen, highlighting key players like Hwang and Gernot Trauner, whose influence was instrumental in Feyenoord’s dominance over Benfica. “How dominant they were tonight in Lisbon was really amazing,” he added.
Youri Mulder, another analyst, also praised the visitors’ performance, stating, “We expected more from Benfica, but Feyenoord was fantastic both on and off the ball. They were a real team, controlling the game and creating numerous chances.”
Site Opinion
Feyenoord’s resurgence in the Champions League demonstrates their growing strength and resilience, especially following their early setback against Leverkusen. The Dutch side has shown they can compete at the highest level, using a solid team structure, fluid midfield play, and effective pressing to unsettle even the most seasoned European opponents.
Benfica, on the other hand, must reassess their approach. Despite their strong start to the campaign, they were outclassed by Feyenoord in key areas. Their defence, particularly the often reliable Otamendi, struggled to contain the pace and creativity of Feyenoord’s attacking play. Moving forward, they will need to address these vulnerabilities if they are to maintain their hopes of progressing from the group stage.
