Forgotten Clubs: Limerick FC

The city of Limerick is located in the heart of Munster province, on the banks of the River Shannon.

Known for its vibrant cultural scene and medieval heritage, Limerick also has an interesting football story in the form of Limerick FC. Founded in 1937, Limerick FC has experienced many triumphs and tribulations, with its eventual collapse in 2020 marking a sombre chapter in the club’s history.

Limerick FC, originally named Limerick City, quickly became a focal point for football in the region. The club’s early years culminated in their first major success in the 1959-60 season when they won the League of Ireland title. This victory was a milestone for the club and a source of immense pride for the city. Home matches at the Markets Field became electric events, drawing fans across Limerick and beyond.

The 1960s and 70s solidified Limerick’s position in Irish football. The club won the FAI Cup in 1971 and again in 1982, triggering celebrations that echoed through the city’s streets. These decades also saw the club compete in European competitions, with memorable matches for supporters to cherish.

One of the most famous matches in Limerick FC’s history occurred in 1980 during the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Drawn against the mighty Real Madrid, Limerick faced an uphill battle. The first leg, played at Lansdowne Road due to stadium regulations, saw Limerick put up a valiant fight despite a 2-1 defeat. They ultimately fell 5-1 in the away leg, but these matches, underscored the club’s ability to punch above its weight and left a lasting impression on Irish football fans.

Despite these highs, Limerick FC’s journey was frequently marred by financial instability. The 1990s and early 2000s were particularly turbulent, with the club experiencing relegations and off-field struggles. The club saw a revival in the 2010s, with promotion to the Premier Division in 2012 and a return to the Markets Field in 2015, symbolizing a fresh start and renewed hope.

However, the seeds of financial instability had been sown deep, and by the late 2010s, the cracks began to widen. The 2018 season ended in relegation from the Premier Division, a blow that compounded existing financial woes. The situation deteriorated rapidly in the following years, with mounting debts and administrative challenges pushing the club to the brink. Despite desperate efforts to secure funding and keep the club afloat, Limerick FC was officially wound up in 2020, leaving a void in the hearts of its supporters.

In the aftermath of Limerick FC’s dissolution, a new entity emerged, aiming to revive football in the city. Treaty United was formed to restore the legacy and passion that Limerick FC had embodied. This new club, named after the historic Treaty of Limerick, sought to build on the foundations laid by its predecessor and bring professional football back to the city.
