The Eredivisie is well underway, and once again, Ajax seem to be in for a season of struggle.
No such fate befell their one-time title rivals, PSV, who are up and running quickly as they look to defend their title. We started with the Eindhoven side as our match of the weekend, with two others getting an honourable mention.
Match of the Weekend: Almere City 1-7 PSV Eindhoven
PSV Eindhoven cruised to a commanding 7-1 victory over Almere City, extending their flawless start to the Eredivisie campaign. The warning signs were there early for the hosts when Noa Lang teed up Guus Til for the opener just 10 minutes in. Luuk de Jong doubled PSV’s lead soon after, heading home from a corner.
While PSV’s scoring spree paused, Almere City briefly thought they had a lifeline early in the second half, only for their goal to be disallowed. Kornelius Hansen eventually pulled one back in the 57th minute, reducing the deficit to 2-1. However, this only spurred PSV into action, as substitute Couhaib Driouech made it 3-1 before Malik Tillman, an own goal from Theo Barbet, Hirving Lozano, and Ricardo Pepi added to the tally, completing the 7-1 rout.
The match also saw a debut for 17-year-old defender Michael Bresser, rounding off a perfect evening for the reigning champions.
Sparta Rotterdam 1-1 Feyenoord
The Rotterdam derby ended in a 1-1 stalemate, with Feyenoord forced to settle for a draw after going down to ten men.
Feyenoord started strong, with Tobias Lauritsen testing Timon Wellenreuther and rattling the crossbar. At the other end, David Hancko saw his effort strike the post. Sparta took the lead just before halftime when Camiel Neghli capitalized on a Wellenreuther error, coolly slotting into an empty net after the goalkeeper’s failed clearance.
Despite several missed opportunities to extend their lead, Sparta couldn’t put the game away, and Quinten Timber brought Feyenoord level with a well-taken finish after an hour. However, Feyenoord’s hopes of a comeback were dented when Ramiz Zerrouki received a second yellow card, leaving them a man down.
Late drama ensued as Feyenoord were initially awarded a penalty, only for VAR to downgrade it to a free kick, which they failed to convert. Sparta had the better chances in the closing minutes, but Feyenoord held firm to secure a point.
