Seven Combani players were denied permission to travel to mainland France due to their irregular immigration status, despite intervention by Anchya Bamana, a National Rally (RN) MP for Mayotte.
Travel Complications and Controversy
Combani, a team from the overseas French territory of Mayotte, had to field a weakened squad after their undocumented players were refused entry to mainland France. The refusal came despite the efforts of MP Bamana, who reportedly requested safe conduct for the players from the Mayotte prefect. The prefect, however, declined, citing legal requirements for travel to mainland France, which mandate regular immigration status and valid residence permits.
“I made this request in good faith,” Bamana told Libération, later expressing satisfaction with the prefect’s decision after fully understanding the implications of the case.
Legal and Social Implications
Mayotte’s prefect, François-Xavier Bieuville, justified the refusal by explaining that four players had submitted medical visa applications that were recently closed, while two others had incomplete applications as parents of French children. Additionally, two of the seven players were noted to be “unfavourably known” to the police and gendarmerie.
On social media, Daniel Zaïdani, Marine Le Pen’s spokesperson in Mayotte, criticised the players, stating: “Too delinquent to obtain a pass for Paris! But good profile to stay in Mayotte!” The comments sparked further debate about the intersection of sport and immigration issues in the overseas territories.

Match Challenges and Accusations
The match, originally postponed due to accusations of falsified medical certificates during Combani’s victory over Crépy-en-Valois in the previous round, is now set to take place in Corsica. Despite adverse weather warnings, the fixture will likely go ahead with Combani fielding a significantly reduced squad.
This situation sheds light on the challenges faced by overseas clubs participating in national competitions, where logistical and legal barriers can often outweigh sporting considerations.
Site Opinion
The controversy surrounding the Diables Noirs de Combani highlights the complex intersection of sport, immigration policy, and public perception in France. While football is often seen as a unifying force, cases like this underscore the difficulties faced by overseas territories where legal and administrative challenges create barriers to participation on a national stage.
For the Coupe de France to truly embody its inclusive spirit, more robust mechanisms may be needed to address these disparities. While adherence to immigration laws is crucial, flexibility and support for overseas clubs navigating such unique circumstances could foster greater equity in French football. Ultimately, this episode serves as a reminder of the broader socio-political dynamics influencing sport in France.
