Can Malaga secure back-to-back promotions?

After falling down into the third tier of Spanish football, Malaga will want to start their resurgence back up the divisions.

Malaga spent the 23/24 season in the Primera Federación (3rd tier) after being relegated from La Liga 2 in 22/23. Los Boquerones bounced straight back following their demotion, finishing third in the Federación. Now, Malaga are back in the second tier, looking to complete their resurgence, and getting back into La Liga.

Not long ago Malaga were competing competitively with the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona at the top end of La Liga, and fighting to get Champions League football against Valencia and Athletico Madrid.

In the 12/13 season, Los Boquerones got into the Champions League group stages, being drawn out with Italian giants AC Milan. Malaga progressed top of the group, and even beat Porto 2-1 on aggregate in the Round of 16, but bowed out to eventual finalists Borussia Dortmund in the quarterfinals.

Since then, Malaga had a few mid-table seasons in La Liga, before being relegated in 17/18, to spend five campaigns in La Liga 2. Malaga’s position lowered each year, before the disastrous term of 22/23 which saw Los Boquerones relegated.

Malaga have played three games so far this season, drawing twice and winning once. On the opening day, Malaga faced off against Racing de Ferrol. Los Boquerones went in front twice in the match, but were pegged back both times by their opponents meaning the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Malaga faced off against CD Mirandes in Gameweek 2 and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. This result meant Malaga went into their next match against Albacete still maintaining an unbeaten record. Victory in their third match wasn’t secured until late in the game when Cordero scored the winning goal in the 94th minute, allowing Malaga to secure a hard-fought win over Albacete.

Malaga has had a good start to the season, remaining undefeated. However, in order to secure back-to-back promotions, they will need to convert their draws into victories. If they continue to demonstrate that they are a tough team to beat, Los Boquerones may finish at the top of the table. This means that if they don’t secure promotion this season, they are establishing a solid foundation for promotion next season.
