Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany is reportedly pushing for the signing of Borussia Dortmund’s rising star Jamie Gittens, with the 20-year-old winger identified as a priority target for the Bavarians.
Bayern’s Interest in Gittens: Kompany Leading the Charge
Vincent Kompany, Bayern Munich’s manager, is spearheading efforts to bring Jamie Gittens to the Allianz Arena. According to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sport DE, Kompany has been actively campaigning for the transfer, collaborating with Bayern’s sporting directors Max Eberl and Christoph Freund to secure the talented winger.
Gittens has enjoyed a meteoric rise at Dortmund, demonstrating his potential as a game-changer in the Bundesliga. The English youth international, who is of Barbadian descent, has been a standout performer in his last two seasons, contributing crucial goals and assists.
Since making his Bundesliga debut in April 2022, Gittens has showcased an ability to deliver in key moments, including scoring twice as a substitute in Dortmund’s 2024–25 Bundesliga opener against Eintracht Frankfurt. His two-goal, man-of-the-match performance in Dortmund’s Champions League opener this season against Club Brugge further cemented his reputation as a future star.
Dortmund’s Challenge: Retaining Their Brightest Talent
Borussia Dortmund has historically struggled to retain young talent in the face of interest from Europe’s elite clubs. Jamie Gittens could follow a similar path as previous Dortmund stars, such as Jadon Sancho, Erling Haaland, and Christian Pulisic, who all left the club for significant moves to top-tier teams.
The 2023–24 season marked a turning point for Gittens, as he overcame injury struggles to make consistent contributions in Dortmund’s domestic and European campaigns. His brace against AC Milan in the Champions League and appearance in the final at Wembley were highlights of a breakout season.
Yet, Dortmund’s inability to secure long-term futures for their brightest stars looms over the club once more. With Gittens’ contract set to expire in June 2025, Bayern Munich’s interest may present a lucrative opportunity for Dortmund but could also further weaken their attacking depth.
Site Opinion: A Strategic Move for Bayern, a Blow for Dortmund
If Bayern Munich manage to sign Jamie Gittens, it would be a strategic masterstroke. Gittens embodies the kind of young, dynamic talent Bayern needs to refresh their attack. Kompany’s focus on him suggests that the manager sees Gittens as a key part of Bayern’s long-term vision.
For Borussia Dortmund, however, losing Gittens would be another bitter pill to swallow. While the club excels at developing young players, their inability to retain stars for sustained success has limited their growth into a European powerhouse. Selling Gittens to a domestic rival like Bayern would add further sting to the transfer, as it would strengthen their fiercest competitors.
Ultimately, the coming months will determine whether Bayern can convince Dortmund to part with their prodigious winger. If Gittens makes the move, it could set the stage for another high-profile rivalry in the Bundesliga, with the young Englishman poised to play a starring role.
