Ajax Brings Back Classic Logo to Celebrate 125th Anniversary

Ajax has delighted fans by announcing the return of its classic logo, marking a significant shift back to tradition.

After 34 years, the emblem that symbolised the club from 1928 to 1991 will once again represent the Amsterdammers. The announcement came on the day of a special gala match between Ajax Legends and Real Madrid Legends, a momentous occasion in itself.

The club shared the news via a heartfelt video on social media, acknowledging recent challenges and a desire to reconnect with its core identity. “Saying that you have changed, that you are not doing justice to your name, that it seems like you have lost your face,” the video declared, emphasising the importance of staying true to the club’s DNA.

Honouring the Past, Inspiring the Future

Menno Geelen, Ajax’s general manager, explained the deeper significance of the logo’s return. “Bringing back the classic logo symbolises this endeavour and is at the same time both a tribute to our rich past and a source of inspiration for the future,” Geelen said in a statement on the club’s website.

The decision coincides with Ajax’s upcoming 125th anniversary on March 18, a milestone that underscores the importance of the club’s legacy. “We know that a majority of our fans have cherished this wish for years, and we felt that our 125th anniversary was a perfect moment to give those fans and ourselves the return of the classic logo as a gift,” added Geelen.

A Symbol of Tradition

The classic Ajax logo was in use until 1991, when it was replaced with a more modern design. Its revival is seen as a nod to the traditions and values that have defined Ajax for nearly a century. The transition will begin next season, with the original emblem gradually returning across the club’s communications.

The iconic emblem will also be celebrated around Sunday afternoon’s match between Ajax Legends and Real Madrid Legends at 3:30 PM. The event is set to be an emotional tribute to Ajax’s storied history, featuring some of the club’s greatest players.

Ajax’s decision to restore the classic logo is a masterstroke that not only honours its illustrious history but also reconnects with its passionate fanbase. In a time when modernisation can sometimes dilute a club’s identity, this move reminds everyone of the values and traditions that make Ajax one of the most iconic names in world football.

As the club prepares to celebrate its 125th anniversary, this gesture represents more than just nostalgia; it’s a commitment to staying true to its roots while inspiring future generations. The return of the classic logo is a powerful symbol of unity and pride for a club deeply rooted in football heritage.
