Viborg’s Magnus Westergaard voiced his frustration after scoring in their 3-1 loss to arch-rivals FC Midtjylland, describing the push that left him bloodied as unnecessary.
In an intense Midtjylland derby at the MCH Arena, Viborg took the lead through Westergaard’s header in the first half. However, FC Midtjylland responded with three goals to claim victory, leaving Viborg empty-handed.
Westergaard, speaking to TV2 Sport after the match, expressed disappointment with both the game’s outcome and an off-ball incident in which he was pushed onto asphalt near the touchline, causing him to bleed from his arm. “I think it’s unnecessary that I was pushed onto some asphalt, but that’s how it is,” Westergaard told Bold.dk.
The derby got off to a thrilling start, with both sides creating early chances. FC Midtjylland’s Aral Simsir tested Viborg’s former keeper, Oscar Hedvall, before Renato Junior came close to putting Viborg ahead, striking the underside of the crossbar. Viborg eventually broke the deadlock in the 24th minute when full-back Daniel Anyembe delivered a precise cross that Westergaard expertly headed into the back of the net.
The match’s intensity ramped up even further, with Midtjylland pushing for an equalizer. Only a heroic clearance from Nicolas Bürgy and a fine save from Hedvall kept the home team at bay until the 35th minute. The equalizer came through a moment of magic from Simsir, who danced past three Viborg defenders in the box before unleashing a spectacular shot that found the top corner—a potential goal of the season contender.
The second half was a more scrappy affair with fewer clear-cut chances, but it was substitutions that ultimately turned the game in FC Midtjylland’s favour. Edward Chilufya combined brilliantly with Franculino, who set up Joel Andersson for a 71st-minute goal to give the home team a 2-1 lead. Just a few minutes later, Chilufya was at the heart of the action again, providing the assist for Franculino’s goal that sealed the 3-1 victory.
Despite a promising start, Westergaard was disappointed with Viborg’s overall performance. “We actually got off to a good start, but we lost our grip on the game and were overmatched. We didn’t press properly and sat too far away. They were allowed to turn the ball over, and there they are good. It costs us,” he admitted post-match.
Reflecting on what went wrong, Westergaard was clear that lessons must be learned. “We have to see what we can learn from this match, and then beat them next time,” he said, determined to bounce back in future encounters.
Viborg remains on 12 points from 10 games, now sitting at risk of falling to eighth place if FC Nordsjælland secures a win against Brøndby on Monday.
Site Opinion
Viborg’s performance in the derby against FC Midtjylland highlighted both their potential and their vulnerabilities. Magnus Westergaard’s opening goal was well-deserved, but the team struggled to maintain their early dominance. A lack of defensive pressure and poor organization allowed Midtjylland to exploit their weaknesses, especially in the second half. Viborg’s ability to press and close down spaces needs urgent improvement if they want to compete with the league’s top teams.
Looking ahead, Viborg must address their defensive lapses and work on maintaining intensity throughout the full 90 minutes. While Westergaard’s goal showed their capability to challenge top opponents, the team’s inability to hold on to their lead is concerning. If Viborg is to remain competitive, they’ll need to find consistency, particularly against stronger opposition like FC Midtjylland.
