St. Pauli’s Bundesliga survival hopes took a major blow after a late Nick Woltemade goal condemned them to defeat against VfB Stuttgart at the Millerntor.
The Hamburg club finished with just nine men after a dramatic encounter that saw two red cards and a missed penalty, despite a heroic effort from goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj.
Late heartbreak for St. Pauli as Stuttgart snatch vital win
Needing victory to all but secure their top-flight status, St. Pauli came out with purpose, pressing from the first whistle. Noah Weißhaupt, a late replacement for the injured Elias Saad, forced Alexander Nübel into an early save, setting the tone for an intense opening.
Despite an evenly matched first half, it was VfB Stuttgart who held the majority of the possession and posed the greater attacking threat. Nikola Vasilj kept St. Pauli in the game with a series of impressive stops, most notably denying Woltemade in the 18th minute. As the teams headed into the break level at 0-0, the tension around the Millerntor was palpable.
The complexion of the game changed drastically on 57 minutes. Defender Siebe Van der Heyden was shown a second yellow card after using his arm to block a goal-bound Woltemade effort, leaving the hosts a man down and handing Stuttgart a golden chance from the penalty spot. However, Vasilj maintained his standout performance, diving to stop Woltemade’s attempt and briefly preserving parity.
Stuttgart continued to dominate against the depleted hosts and finally made their pressure count just before full-time. Ermedin Demirović, introduced as a substitute, teed up Woltemade in the 88th minute for a composed finish that stunned the home crowd and left St. Pauli with little time to respond.
Their hopes of a late equaliser were all but ended in stoppage time when Vasilj, who had been their standout player, was sent off for dissent after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession. Reduced to nine men, St. Pauli were unable to mount a comeback and now face a nervous end to the season.

From St. Pauli’s point of view, this result is nothing short of gutting. Despite being reduced to ten and later nine men, the hosts showed immense spirit and were only undone in the final moments by a moment of quality. Vasilj’s sending off was a bitter end to what had otherwise been a heroic display, and it may well prove pivotal in the relegation battle.
The Hamburg side must now regroup quickly. With matches running out, every point is crucial. This match showed their resilience, but they need discipline and composure in the final games. A repeat of this drama without the result going their way could spell disaster.
