Slovakian Star Reveals Why Liverpool Switch Fell Through

Feyenoord defender Dávid Hancko has spoken candidly about why his potential transfer to Liverpool failed, revealing that age and price were key obstacles.

In a recent interview on the SFZ Podcast, the Slovakian international explained how both Liverpool and Atlético Madrid showed interest in signing him during the summer transfer window. However, the moves ultimately fell through due to financial and personal factors.

Who Came Closest?

Hancko revealed that Atlético Madrid came closest to securing his signature, but the Spanish club could not meet Feyenoord’s asking price.

“Atlético Madrid came closest, but at Feyenoord they didn’t want to let me go for a lower amount than they had in mind,” Hancko said.

He added that the club’s financial constraints meant they were unable to strike a deal, as Atlético had already made a significant transfer commitment with Julián Álvarez from Manchester City.

The defender also discussed his interactions with Liverpool, where he could have reunited with his former manager Arne Slot, who had moved to the Premier League club. However, the transfer never materialised, as Hancko explained:

“Liverpool has a certain transfer philosophy. Age was one problem, the other was the price. Both factors did not speak in my favour.”

Despite these setbacks, Hancko remains focused at Feyenoord, where he continues to play a vital role in the team’s defence. The centre-back, who is under contract with Feyenoord until 2028, stayed in Rotterdam during the summer and will likely continue to be a sought-after player in future transfer windows.

It’s always fascinating to hear players reflect on the intricacies of their transfer experiences, and Hancko’s honesty sheds light on the complex nature of high-profile transfers. The decision by Liverpool and Atlético Madrid to pull out was likely driven by a combination of their club philosophies and financial priorities, which is understandable in today’s market. Hancko’s ability to remain grounded despite these setbacks speaks to his professionalism and dedication to Feyenoord.

Looking ahead, it seems likely that Hancko will attract more attention in future transfer windows, especially as his contract at Feyenoord moves closer to its later years. The defender has proven his worth, and while the summer move didn’t happen, it’s clear that clubs will continue to monitor his progress with great interest.
