Sassuolo’s March to Promotion: A Season of Renewal

Sassuolo’s fortunes took a sharp downturn last May when a loss to Cagliari consigned them to Serie B after an 11-year stay in the top flight.

Struggling to adapt under various managerial changes, the team went through a series of setbacks. The board responded with sweeping changes, parting ways with sports director Giovanni Rossi, who had served the club for 14 years, and appointing Francesco Palmieri, previously youth coordinator, to build a younger, more dynamic squad.

“Over these years, we’ve achieved something extraordinary,” remarked Sassuolo CEO Giovanni Carnevali. “Few expected us to see such results.” It was only a few years ago, in 2016, that Sassuolo made a splash in the Europa League under Eusebio Di Francesco. But, after an uncertain start to last season and the eventual dismissal of Alessio Dionisi, the club found itself facing the harsh realities of relegation. Sassuolo’s new goal became clear: a rapid return to Serie A.

The summer brought significant changes, including the departure of veteran players Defrel, Ferrari, and Pegolo. Transfers of key players like Henrique, Erlic, Bajrami, and Kyriakopoulos generated funds to bolster the squad, with notable additions like Pierini, Odenthal, Iannoni, and Caligara. Moldovan, who gained experience at Atletico Madrid under the tutelage of Jan Oblak, has emerged as the team’s new leader in goal.

Fabio Grosso took over as head coach, bringing a disciplined yet optimistic approach to Sassuolo. The team’s average age has dropped dramatically, making them one of the youngest sides in the league. The youthful energy is bearing fruit: the Neroverdi have climbed to second place, trailing only Pisa, and fans are rallying behind the prospect of a quick Serie A comeback.

Last weekend’s match saw a particularly emotional moment as Domenico Berardi found the net again, ending an 11-month drought. Injuries kept him out of the second half of last season, a period where his absence weighed heavily. Now fully fit, Berardi is determined to lead Sassuolo back to Serie A, just as he did when he first won promotion as an 18-year-old.

A Record-Breaking Start

Under Grosso’s management, Sassuolo has enjoyed a stellar start to the season, with eight matches unbeaten—six victories and two draws—since their last defeat to Cremonese on 31 August. Sassuolo’s 24 goals from 12 games make them the highest-scoring team in Serie B, a stat reflecting the hard work put in during the summer overhaul. This goal-scoring prowess is driven by key players like Pierini, Mulattieri, Thorstvedt, and Laurienté, each of whom embodies the fighting spirit of Sassuolo.

Reflecting on their ambition, CEO Carnevali commented after the relegation to Serie B: “We are determined to return to Serie A immediately.” With Carnevali’s clear vision and Grosso’s promotion-winning experience from his time at Frosinone, the path seems well-charted.

Site Opinion

Sassuolo’s revival reflects the club’s boldness in embracing change. The decision to promote youth and invest in emerging talent marks a departure from traditional strategies, but it’s one that seems to be paying off. Fans are witnessing an exciting brand of football, driven by players who understand the club’s ethos and are eager to prove themselves on a grander stage. Berardi’s return has further galvanized the team and the fanbase, making the possibility of promotion feel within reach.

While promotion is still a distant goal, Grosso’s Sassuolo has demonstrated resilience and tactical sharpness, characteristics essential for a successful campaign. The challenge now will be maintaining consistency against seasoned Serie B competitors. But if their current form is any indication, Sassuolo is more than capable of securing a swift return to Italy’s top tier.
