Real Madrid are poised to make a major push to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martín Zubimendi this summer, as Xabi Alonso identifies the Spain international as a key figure in his plans should he succeed Carlo Ancelotti at the helm of Los Blancos.
Madrid’s interest comes amid growing speculation that Arsenal were leading the race for Zubimendi’s signature. The Premier League side have been working hard behind the scenes and, according to reports, were cautiously optimistic of securing the 26-year-old’s services. However, Alonso’s emergence as Real Madrid’s next manager-in-waiting appears to have significantly altered the landscape.
According to Defensa Central, Alonso has communicated to Real Madrid that signing Zubimendi is essential, with the Bayer Leverkusen boss highlighting the midfielder’s contrasting style compared to the club’s current options. His unique profile has made him a top target, especially as Madrid seek to rejuvenate their midfield for the long term.
Zubimendi, who has a release clause of €60 million (£51.5 million) in his contract with Sociedad, has earned a reputation as one of LaLiga’s most reliable defensive midfielders. Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney previously described him as a “world-class” talent in an interview with The Guardian in February 2024. That level of praise has only intensified Madrid’s desire to add him to their ranks.
The Spanish giants are preparing for a pivotal summer as uncertainty looms over Ancelotti’s future. The Italian manager is reportedly set to depart after the Copa del Rey final to take charge of Brazil, with Alonso positioned as the leading candidate to step in. Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro has confirmed the existence of a “gentleman’s agreement” allowing Alonso to leave for one of his former clubs.
Meanwhile, Zubimendi is not the only player Alonso has his eye on. Real Madrid are also considering a move to re-sign Girona left-back Miguel Gutiérrez, who has impressed since leaving the Bernabéu in 2022. The 23-year-old, who has contributed six goals and 19 assists in 111 matches, is admired by Alonso for his versatility and tactical intelligence. Madrid reportedly retain a buy-back clause worth €8 million (£7 million) for the defender, which could be exercised this summer.
While Arsenal have already made headway in discussions with Zubimendi’s representatives – with TEAMtalk contributor Ben Jacobs stating on 19 February that “a broad set of personal terms have been verbally agreed upon in terms of wage and bonus structure” – the midfielder has not yet made a final decision. Madrid’s late surge and Alonso’s pull may prove decisive.

From a Madrid perspective, this is a strategic moment to reinforce the midfield with a player who embodies both technical quality and tactical discipline. Zubimendi’s ability to shield the defence, control the rhythm of play, and execute in high-pressure scenarios makes him a perfect fit for the demands at the Bernabéu. Xabi Alonso’s familiarity with LaLiga and intimate understanding of the role only further justifies this pursuit.
Arsenal may have led the race initially, but the emotional and professional draw of representing Real Madrid – combined with the opportunity to work under a compatriot and idol like Alonso – could tilt the scales. For Los Blancos, this isn’t just a signing; it’s a statement of intent for the next generation of Galácticos.
