Manchester City midfielder Rodri has reportedly emerged as Real Madrid’s top target to replace the retired Toni Kroos, but any potential deal appears highly unlikely.
Real Madrid Target Rodri as Midfield Overhaul Continues
As Real Madrid aim to transition from their golden era of midfield maestros, attention has turned to Manchester City’s Rodri as a possible heir to Toni Kroos. According to reports from Bild, the Spaniard has been identified as the “perfect” replacement for Kroos, who retired from football following Euro 2024.
Real Madrid’s need for a successor has become more urgent following a challenging season, despite a recent 1-0 La Liga victory over Athletic Bilbao thanks to Federico Valverde’s late goal. Carlo Ancelotti’s side remains four points adrift of Barcelona at the summit and was humbled by Arsenal in a 5-1 aggregate defeat in the Champions League quarter-finals, where Kroos’s absence was keenly felt.
While Real Madrid continue to boast midfield talent, none are seen to replicate Kroos’s unique passing range and tactical intelligence, further fuelling speculation over a summer move for Rodri.
Rodri Content at Manchester City Despite Real Interest
Despite the links, Rodri’s departure from the Etihad Stadium remains unlikely. The 28-year-old is currently recovering from an ACL injury sustained in September, but prior to his setback, Manchester City were reportedly preparing to offer him a new long-term contract extending until 2030.
The Ballon d’Or winner is said to be “very comfortable” at Manchester City, and there has been no indication from either the player or the club that a transfer is being considered. Rodri’s existing deal runs until 2027, and the reigning Premier League champions remain determined to retain one of their key figures once he returns to full fitness.
Obstacles to a Rodri Transfer
Several factors make a move improbable. Rodri’s past association with Atletico Madrid could complicate any transfer to their fierce rivals Real Madrid. Moreover, tensions remain between the Spanish giants and the midfielder following last year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony, where Rodri’s win over Vinicius Junior was met with resentment from the Madrid hierarchy, who refused to send a delegation to the event.
Real Madrid’s admiration for Rodri is clear, but prising him away from Manchester City, particularly given his stature and the club’s ambitions, seems an almost impossible task at present.
Site Opinion
From Manchester City’s perspective, Rodri’s commitment is a significant boost as they plan for future success. In a season disrupted by injuries and fierce competition, keeping their most influential midfielder underlines the club’s stability and ambition under Pep Guardiola and his eventual successor.
While Real Madrid’s interest is flattering and a testament to Rodri’s standing in world football, his bond with Manchester City, both on and off the pitch, appears too strong to break. Should he regain full fitness, a new contract seems inevitable, solidifying his role at the heart of City’s plans for years to come.
