Norwich City Winger In Talks For Switzerland Return

Norwich City winger Christian Fassnacht has reportedly engaged in discussions about a potential return to Swiss champions Young Boys.

The experienced player, who has made just one Championship appearance this season due to an Achilles injury, is set to see his contract at Carrow Road expire at the end of the current campaign. According to respected Swiss publication Berner Zeitung, Young Boys are considering bringing Fassnacht back to their squad after a difficult start to the season, managing only nine points from their first ten matches. The club has been assessing options ahead of the January transfer window, and discussions have already taken place with the player’s representatives over a possible return to the Wankdorf Stadium.

Norwich signed Fassnacht from the Swiss side in 2023 for a fee of £3m, reuniting him with manager David Wagner in Norfolk. The move marked Fassnacht’s first time playing outside of Switzerland, following a six-year tenure with Young Boys where he made over 250 appearances and won two Swiss Super League titles.

Fassnacht himself has expressed his affection for his former club, saying, “Of course, we also talk about future plans. It’s clear to me that if I move back to Switzerland, then only to Bern,” as quoted by 4-4-2.com.

Despite these talks, Fassnacht has made it clear in recent interviews that he remains open to extending his stay at Norwich. In a discussion with The Pink Un, Fassnacht spoke about his current contract situation, stating: “At the moment I’m quite calm, to be honest. That’s part of the business. Of course I want to stay, I want to play well. Hopefully the club says ‘hey, let’s extend the contract with Fassi and he stays for another one or two years’. But at the moment I can’t do anything. First of all I need to get fit, and then we will see what’s next.”

Fassnacht’s only appearance for Norwich this season came in a 2-0 EFL Cup defeat against Oxford United. With his return to training scheduled for next week, he is expected to be back in Championship action soon. Norwich City also retains the option to extend his contract by a further year, should they wish to do so.

Site Opinion:

From a pundit’s perspective, Christian Fassnacht’s potential return to Young Boys seems like a move that would benefit both parties. Fassnacht enjoyed great success during his six-year spell in Bern, and a return to familiar surroundings could reignite his career following a tough period in England marred by injury. For Young Boys, bringing back such an experienced player would add a much-needed boost as they look to improve on a disappointing start to their domestic campaign.

However, Norwich City could be reluctant to let a player of Fassnacht’s calibre leave, especially with his contract situation still open-ended. If he returns to full fitness, Fassnacht has the quality to be a key asset in their Championship campaign, and the club’s option to extend his deal suggests they are keen to keep him if he can contribute significantly in the months ahead. This decision could hinge on his form and fitness in the coming weeks.
