Norwegian Side Target 23-Year-Old Sheffield United Midfielder

Sheffield United midfielder Ismaila Coulibaly is reportedly a transfer target for Norwegian club Fredrikstad FK, according to Fotbollskanalen.

Coulibaly, 23, joined Sheffield United in 2020 but has struggled to cement a place in the team. The Mali international, who has earned one senior cap, is under contract at Bramall Lane until summer 2025. Despite being named in Chris Wilder’s 25-man EFL squad for this season, his long-term future remains uncertain.

Interest from Norway

Fredrikstad FK, who finished sixth in the 2024 Eliteserien following their promotion in 2023, are keen to add Coulibaly to their squad. The Norwegian side, founded in 1903, play at a 12,565-capacity stadium and see the midfielder as a potential boost to their depth and competition.

Coulibaly began his career at CS Duguwolofila in Mali before moving to Sarpsborg, where he scored four goals in 28 appearances. Sheffield United signed him after noticing his performances in Norway, but his English stint has been marked by limited appearances and two loan spells at Belgian side Beerschot, where he played 44 matches and scored five goals.

Future Uncertain

Coulibaly has made nine appearances for the Blades in total, with only two this season. A move back to Norway could benefit both parties, allowing Sheffield United to free up squad space and finances while giving the player a fresh start.

Sheffield United currently sit atop the Championship table as they aim for an immediate return to the Premier League. Their next fixture sees them face Cardiff City away this weekend, as they hope to maintain their strong form during the festive period.

Site Opinion

Ismaila Coulibaly’s move to Sheffield United was initially seen as an investment for the future, but the lack of regular game time has hindered his development. A transfer to Fredrikstad FK could provide the stability and opportunity he needs to revitalise his career.

For the Blades, allowing Coulibaly to leave would make practical sense. With their sights set firmly on Premier League promotion, streamlining the squad to focus on immediate contributors is a logical step. A departure could be mutually beneficial, marking a fresh start for both the player and the club.
