Manchester United are preparing to make a bold move for Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano, with his contract due to expire in 2026.
The Red Devils see the French international as the man to shore up their back line and provide Ruben Amorim with world-class defensive reinforcements.
United’s Defensive Ambitions
After a difficult campaign last season, United have already reshaped their attack with Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko all arriving. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens also joined from Royal Antwerp, yet defensive recruitment was conspicuously absent. That could soon change, with reports suggesting United are ready to pounce should Upamecano leave Bavaria as a free agent.
According to Fichajes, the 26-year-old is viewed internally as a significant upgrade despite the presence of Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt. INEOS are said to be keen to provide Amorim with the tools required to re-establish United as genuine Premier League contenders.
Bayern’s Contract Stalemate
Upamecano signed for Bayern Munich from RB Leipzig in 2021 and has since gone on to win three Bundesliga titles, amassing more than 150 appearances for the German champions. Yet despite his importance, contract talks have stalled due to his salary demands, leaving the door open for potential suitors.
Earning around €16m a year, equivalent to £266,000 per week, his wage package presents a challenge. However, with both Maguire and Casemiro out of contract at the end of the campaign, funds could be reallocated to tempt the Frenchman to Old Trafford.
A World-Class Option
The France international, capped 32 times, has already scored twice for his country and is considered one of the Bundesliga’s most consistent defenders. United believe his combination of experience, physicality and composure on the ball would transform their back line at a time when the Premier League demands defensive stability at the highest level.
If they can land him without a transfer fee, it would represent one of the biggest bargains of 2026.
Site Opinion
The pursuit of Dayot Upamecano underlines United’s new transfer strategy under INEOS: calculated, ambitious and targeted at elite-level reinforcements. Bayern’s hesitation has created an opening that may not remain for long, and while financial considerations loom large, the chance to sign a proven world-class centre-back for free is rare. Should United complete this deal, it would not only strengthen Amorim’s squad but also send a statement of intent to rivals at home and abroad.
