Galatasaray Boss Hits Back Over Leroy Sane Criticism

Okan Buruk has defended Leroy Sané after Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann questioned the winger’s future at international level.

The row comes in the wake of Galatasaray’s heavy 5-1 Champions League defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Sané Under Fire

Sané’s move from Bayern Munich to Galatasaray this summer was always likely to spark debate, and Nagelsmann wasted little time in casting doubt on his international career. The Germany boss argued that the Super Lig was “a bit worse than the Bundesliga and other top European leagues” and insisted Sané must deliver standout numbers to be considered for future call-ups.

Although he acknowledged the winger’s recent goals and assists, Nagelsmann stressed he expects more from the 29-year-old if he is to remain in contention for the national side. “He simply has to deliver more,” he told reporters.

Buruk’s Fiery Response

Buruk bristled at the comments when addressing the media following Gala’s collapse in Frankfurt. The Turkish champions had taken an early lead through Yunus Akgün after Sané’s pressing created the chance, but defensive errors and two own goals turned the contest into a rout.

“I disagree with Julian Nagelsmann’s comments about Leroy Sané,” Buruk said. “Germany also lost in their first international match. You lost to Slovakia in a place where you thought you were very good. We’ve had very good matches against Tottenham and Bayern Munich. I don’t remember Frankfurt giving the ball away 65% of the time.”

Despite the defeat, Sané still etched his name into the record books. By scoring and assisting on his Champions League debut for Galatasaray, he became the first player in competition history to do so for four different clubs.

Pressure Mounting

Frankfurt’s victory was sparked by a Davinson Sánchez own goal before teenager Can Uzun fired in a superb strike. A second own goal by Wilfried Singo compounded the damage before Jonathan Burkardt and Ansgar Knauff completed the scoring. For Gala, the heavy loss leaves them bottom of their group with Premier League giants Liverpool up next.

Nagelsmann’s pointed remarks underline the pressure on Sané to deliver consistently if he is to remain part of Germany’s World Cup plans. For Galatasaray, the challenge is to bounce back quickly from their opening-day thrashing and prove their star winger’s decision to move to Istanbul was not a step down.

Site Opinion

The debate over Sané encapsulates a wider tension in European football: how national team coaches weigh league strength against individual performance. Nagelsmann’s words reflect Germany’s high standards, but Buruk’s defence highlights the disrespect often shown to leagues outside the traditional elite.

Sané’s numbers will ultimately settle the argument. If he produces for Galatasaray in Europe, the narrative changes; if not, questions over his international relevance will only intensify.
