Former Premier League Manager Expresses Admiration For Everton Prospect

Former Newcastle Unnited boss Steve Bruce has made no secret of his admiration for Everton goalkeeper Harry Tyrer, and the current Blackpool chief was once again full of praise following the youngster’s latest display.

Tyrer, 23, has grown into the number one shirt since joining the Seasiders on loan, keeping 12 clean sheets in 35 matches. Though the team lost 2-1 to Wrexham on Easter Monday, it was another game that highlighted the keeper’s shot-stopping qualities.

“He made two great saves to keep us in it, two really exceptional saves – and we needed that,” Bruce said. “We thought that might give us the tonic, but unfortunately we huffed and puffed, and didn’t play well enough.”

It’s been a season of learning for Tyrer, who arrived with no senior league appearances under his belt. Bruce acknowledged that adapting to League One intensity was always going to be a challenge, but believes the young stopper has risen to the occasion.

Bruce Reveals Desire to Keep Tyrer on Fylde Coast

Bruce has previously said he would like to keep Tyrer at the club beyond this season, though he understands that decision will ultimately rest with Everton. However, he’s been keen to stress the improvement seen in the player since day one.

“We’d like him to stay,” said Bruce last month. “It’s about whether that’s possible because he’s not ours.”

He added: “The growth we’ve put into him has been huge. He’s got better each week. When we first got him, he hadn’t even played a game in the league, so it was a big ask for him to come in and perform week in, week out.”

What stands out most to Bruce is Tyrer’s commitment to his craft. The goalkeeper has worked hard to improve his physical condition and has earned the respect of teammates with his drive and discipline.

“Fair play to him, he’s worked hard and lost a bit of timber – he wants to be a keeper. I’m really pleased for him.”

The comments reflect a manager who clearly sees the value in long-term development — not just short-term results. With other loanees set to return to parent clubs this summer, securing Tyrer’s services again could be crucial for Blackpool’s ambitions next season.

Tyrer’s progress has been steady and hard-earned. What started as a risky loan now looks like one of the club’s most important deals. For Steve Bruce, it’s a rare piece of stability in a season that’s lacked consistency. Whether Blackpool can keep him depends on Everton’s plans — but if they can, it may just be one of the smartest moves they make this summer.
