Former Manchester United Boss Set For Portugal Role: Current United Boss Was Considered

Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is in negotiations to return to Benfica, 25 years after his first spell in charge.

The Portuguese giants dismissed Bruno Lage following their Champions League collapse against Qarabag, with Mourinho swiftly emerging as a leading candidate.

Benfica Seek Swift Appointment

Benfica’s dramatic 3–2 defeat to Qarabag on Tuesday night proved the final straw for Lage, who oversaw the squandered two-goal lead in front of a furious Estádio da Luz crowd. Club president Rui Costa confirmed a new coach will be in place before Saturday’s Primeira Liga fixture against AVS.

“The Benfica coach’s profile must be that of a winner,” Rui Costa said. “A coach representing a club of this size must be one with the ability to bring this team to the levels we demand and give us the titles we desire.”

Mourinho, who was dismissed by Fenerbahçe in August after just over a year in charge, has been in early discussions with his boyhood club. While no agreement has been finalised, sources indicate he is open to a sensational return.

A Full-Circle Story

The 62-year-old famously began his managerial career at Benfica in 2000, leaving after just 10 games amid boardroom unrest. Since then he has built one of the most decorated CVs in football, lifting league titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain, and winning the Champions League with Porto and Inter Milan.

If confirmed, the reunion will hand Mourinho a series of emotional fixtures. Benfica are due at Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the Champions League on 30 September, followed by a trip to Porto days later. Real Madrid will also visit Lisbon in January, setting up another clash with one of Mourinho’s former employers.

Other Options Considered

Reports in Portugal have also linked Benfica with current United boss Ruben Amorim, under pressure at Old Trafford, who previously spent nine years as a player with the Eagles. However, sources close to the Lisbon club suggest Mourinho’s availability and stature make him the standout candidate.

Benfica have not won the Primeira Liga since 2023 and face presidential elections next month. The appointment of a high-profile coach could stabilise the situation and placate restless supporters.

Site Opinion

Bringing Mourinho back to Lisbon would be a gamble rooted in sentiment and ambition. His legacy in Portugal remains untouchable, but his recent record shows a pattern of brief, turbulent tenures.

Yet Benfica’s hierarchy may feel his charisma, tactical acumen and unrivalled experience on the European stage provide the spark they desperately need. A return to where it all began could be Mourinho’s chance to close the circle—though whether his pragmatic methods align with Benfica’s long-term vision remains to be seen.
