Former Celtic Man Linked With Panathinaikos Switch

Panathinaikos are reportedly showing interest in former Celtic winger Lewis Morgan.

According to Pete O’Rourke, who reported the news on X, Panathinaikos head coach Diego Alonso is a big admirer of Morgan, having previously worked with him during their time together at Inter Miami.

Morgan, currently playing in Major League Soccer (MLS) for the New York Red Bulls, has enjoyed a steady rise in his footballing career. Starting his professional journey with St Mirren in Scotland, Morgan helped the club secure promotion to the Scottish Premiership before making a high-profile move to Celtic in 2018. Although his time at Celtic didn’t lead to consistent first-team opportunities, Morgan was loaned out to Sunderland and Hibernian, gaining valuable experience.

In 2020, Morgan switched to MLS, joining Inter Miami, where he worked under Diego Alonso. His time in Miami was a success, as he quickly became one of the team’s standout players, earning the club’s MVP award in his debut season. Morgan’s performances caught the attention of the New York Red Bulls, who signed him in 2022. Since moving to the Red Bulls, he has continued to impress, contributing both goals and assists. Morgan’s form in the US has also led to international recognition, with several caps for the Scotland national team.

Panathinaikos, one of Greece’s most successful clubs, are looking to bolster their squad as they compete in both domestic and European competitions. The Athens-based side finished second in the Greek Super League last season, narrowly missing out on the title. This solid campaign earned them a place in European football for the 2024/25 season, where they are competing in the UEFA Europa League. Panathinaikos have been drawn into a group featuring top sides, including Liverpool, Union Saint-Gilloise, and LASK, presenting a significant challenge as they aim to make their mark on the continental stage.

So far in the 2024/25 season, Panathinaikos have shown strong form, sitting near the top of the Super League table and aiming to challenge for the title once again. Diego Alonso’s side is well-organised, and with European football on the horizon, they are looking to add depth and quality to maintain their competitiveness on multiple fronts.

A move to Panathinaikos could be a fantastic opportunity for Morgan to continue his development. Playing in Europe would offer the winger a chance to test himself against stronger opposition, something that could enhance his standing both at the club and international level. Additionally, reuniting with Alonso, a coach who knows how to utilise his strengths, could help him settle quickly and make an impact in Greece. Given Panathinaikos’ ambitions and current form, this could be the perfect move to rejuvenate his career and help him reach new heights.

For Panathinaikos, signing a player of Morgan’s calibre would be a significant coup. His experience in different leagues, combined with his versatility and goal-scoring ability, would add a new dimension to their attack. As they look to compete on multiple fronts this season, adding depth and quality in wide areas could be crucial to their success.
