1. FC Koln is once again embroiled in internal turmoil, with the board under fire for an open letter defending embattled sports director Christian Keller.
The communication, seen by many as a desperate move, arrives just as the club resumes its league campaign.
A Club in Crisis
After weeks of silence during a major crisis, President Werner Wolf (68) and his board have reached out to the club’s 140,000 members in a controversial letter. The board claims that despite relegation to the second division, FC Koln is on the right track in areas like scouting, financial restructuring, and youth development.
In the letter, the board concedes, “Yes, relegation could perhaps have been avoided if more money had been invested in the team.” This admission has only fuelled criticism, as fans blame sports boss Christian Keller for his perceived austerity and lacklustre transfer decisions.
Elections and Keller’s Future
The letter comes during a critical period for the board, with elections looming in autumn 2025. According to reports, the board is not only backing Keller but may secretly be planning to extend his contract beyond February 2025, despite fan demands for his dismissal.
The board wrote, “We are convinced that we have the right people in the right positions. Continuity in key roles is essential for our chosen path.” However, this stance has divided club leadership, with members of the joint committee reportedly opposing Keller’s continuation.
Fan Backlash
Fans have expressed outrage at what they see as tone-deaf leadership. Keller’s tenure has been marked by a poor transfer record, a transfer ban, and relegation, leaving many sceptical about his ability to lead the club back to the Bundesliga. The board’s appeal for unity—“You can all help our men by continuing to support the teams positively”—has been met with scepticism and frustration.
