FC Koln reignited their Bundesliga promotion hopes with a dramatic last-minute 1-0 win over Greuther Fürth.
With the victory, the team climbed to sixth in the league, well-positioned ahead of the Carnival celebrations on November 11th. However, squad manager Thomas Kessler cautioned the team against premature celebration or becoming distracted by their recent success.
Kessler’s stance is clear: “No player should look at the table today. It is completely irrelevant. We have to look from week to week. We now have two important wins and first of all an international break. Then we have to prepare for Münster.”
The ‘table ban’ reflects Koln’s recent ups and downs. Just weeks ago, the team appeared to be struggling, having dropped to 12th place after heavy losses to Darmstadt and Paderborn. Head coach Gerhard Struber faced intense criticism, and the dream of promotion seemed to be fading. But two wins later, Koln has bounced back, with system and personnel changes restoring momentum.

Euphoria Check Ahead of Carnival Season
With Koln’s upcoming away game against Münster on November 22, Kessler has also warned the players against getting carried away by the festivities of Carnival. “If anyone thinks that we can walk even one meter less after two wins in Münster, there will be a rude awakening,” Kessler warned. “This will be a much more difficult game. We need to bring even more intensity to it.”
The squad manager gave his players the green light for moderate Carnival celebrations, adding, “The boys can have a Kölsch in secret if they have a good costume. But I hope they take it seriously, because we know that there are a lot of colds going around at the moment. We don’t want anyone to be sick before the important game against Münster.”
Kessler’s rational approach aims to balance criticism and encouragement. “We were rightly criticized for bad games,” he stated. “We will evaluate this positive phase just as rationally. In terms of points, we have moved closer again. But if we don’t keep at it, it won’t do us any good.”
Site Opinion
Koln’s bounce-back under Gerhard Struber is a testament to the team’s resilience and the coaching staff’s adaptability. Struber’s tactical shifts and the players’ response have seen Koln regain their footing just as they looked to be slipping out of contention. With careful management, Koln appears capable of turning this momentum into sustained success.
However, Kessler’s cautionary stance is well-founded. The volatile nature of league football and the impact of distractions like Carnival means Koln must stay grounded and focused. Promotion aspirations require discipline and a clear-headed approach. Koln’s future in the promotion race will hinge on their ability to harness recent successes without losing sight of the hard work still needed to secure a Bundesliga spot.
