CD Feirense Announce Exciting Capture From England

Portuguese second-tier side CD Feirense have announced the signing of former Queens Park Rangers winger Mide Shodipo following his release from Lincoln City.

Sitting 15th in the table, Azuis da Feira are in need of a boost, and they may find that in 26-year-old Shodipo. The Irish-born winger has been capped at Under 21 level for his country, and has more than 150 senior appearances in England on his CV.

He joins a Feirense side currently just outside the relegation spots in the Portuguese second tier. Having played 19 matches, they’re four points clear of Leixoes and just five points shy of Benfica B in ninth place. However, with 18 goals, they’re the second-lowest scorers outside of the relegation spots, something they’ll be hoping Shodipo can remedy.

The wide attacker came through the youth ranks at QPR, making his senior debut in 2016. Loan spells with Port Vale and Colchester brought a handful of appearances, but a stint with Oxford raised his profile – he bagged 13 goals in 46 outings as they challenged for a play-off spot in 2021.

After a short stay at Sheffield Wednesday, he returned to QPR but struggled to make an impact and ended up on loan with Lincoln City. He scored twice in 20 games but was released by QPR on his return. After a trial with Reading, he signed a short-term deal with Lincoln in October, adding nine outings and one goal to his tally in England.

He was released by The Imps earlier this month, and today’s move sees him trying his luck in Europe rather than fighting for another chance at a lower level in the UK.

Shodipo is a real talent on his day, but it’s been a torrid two seasons for him. He’s toiled away at Lincoln for almost a year now but has been used sparingly, not least in his latest spell.

It was widely assumed by many supporters he would turn up in League Two, but instead, he’ll try his luck on another stage altogether.

Portugal’s second tier isn’t exactly a huge springboard to international recognition, but if he gets regular football in a positive environment, who knows where it could lead the former Irish youth international?
