Alexandre Mendy made his long-awaited return to the starting lineup for SM Caen in their recent clash against Grenoble.
Four months after his last start, and following a turbulent summer transfer window where he openly expressed his desire to leave for English outfit Sunderland, the striker wasted no time in making an impact. Just minutes into the game, Mendy latched onto a deep pass from Bilal Brahimi and coolly slotted home. It was a dream start, and for a brief moment, it seemed like the perfect comeback story for Mendy and Caen.
However, as the game unfolded, the fairytale began to fade. Despite Mendy’s early goal, Caen couldn’t maintain their momentum and eventually fell to defeat in the Alps. “Maybe we scored too early,” Mendy reflected post-match. “After that, we fell back.” The frustration was palpable, especially for a player who had envisioned a different path just a few months ago.
Mendy’s return to the forefront of Caen’s attack is significant, especially after a summer in which he expected to be playing his football in England. A move to Sunderland seemed on the cards, and Mendy had already mentally prepared himself for a new chapter. But the transfer never materialised, leaving the Bissau-Guinean forward to refocus his efforts on Stade Malherbe.
Against Ajaccio in a subsequent match, Mendy again showed his quality. He came close to doubling his tally with a clever attempt early on, but the rest of the game left both him and the team frustrated. Caen couldn’t capitalise, and Mendy’s form, while promising, hasn’t yet reached its full potential. “100% recovered? No, despite everything, there are some after-effects,” Mendy admitted. “After-effects of what happened in the past, and also everything tied to my family and the packed boxes from this summer.”
Despite these lingering thoughts, Mendy is staying focused on his football. “The furniture is reassembled, but the boxes are not yet unpacked,” he joked. “There are a lot of boxes to go through, but right now we’re concentrating on football. When there’s a break, we’ll unpack everything.”
For Caen, Mendy’s reintegration into the team could be crucial. He’s already proven that, when fit and focused, he’s one of the top strikers in Ligue 2. Even though he’s still not at his peak, his ability to find the back of the net quickly and efficiently offers Caen a potent weapon up front. If he can shake off the mental and physical after-effects of a turbulent off-season, Mendy could lead the charge for the club as they push for success in the latter half of the campaign.
Site Opinion – Mendy’s Mindset
Mendy’s situation is a unique one for Caen. After nearly leaving in the summer, it’s clear that his heart was briefly set on a move to England. Yet, his professional attitude since returning to the fold speaks volumes about his commitment. The striker’s candid comments about still unpacking the “boxes” in his mind illustrate the mental hurdles he’s working through, but he also shows a desire to put those distractions behind him.
For SM Caen, a fully focused and sharp Alexandre Mendy could be the difference-maker in the season ahead. His instinctive finishing and ability to lead the line are invaluable, and if he can recapture his best form, Caen could have one of the league’s most dangerous forwards at their disposal. The key now is helping Mendy unpack those metaphorical boxes and fully settle back into life at the club.
