Bundesliga Round Up – Bayern Munich’s Long Run Ends

Bayern Munich’s perfect start is finally over after a dramatic 2-2 draw with Union Berlin that snapped their 16-game winning streak across all competitions.

The champions were forced to rescue a point in stoppage time, with Harry Kane striking late to salvage pride for Vincent Kompany’s side after a defiant home display at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.

Union Berlin fight back to stop the streak

Union Berlin had gone toe-to-toe with Bayern from the start and thought they had opened the scoring through Ilyas Ansah before VAR ruled it out for offside. Their pressure paid off when Janik Haberer’s low corner was swept home by Danilho Doekhi, sending the Berlin crowd wild. Bayern responded through Luis Díaz, whose solo run and finish from a tight angle levelled matters before half-time.

After the break, Union continued to frustrate the Bavarians and looked to have pulled off a shock when Doekhi struck again, reacting quickest inside the box to prod past Manuel Neuer with seven minutes remaining. Yet in true Bayern fashion, Harry Kane popped up deep into stoppage time to head home the equaliser and deny the hosts a famous victory. The result means Bayern stay top but miss the chance to extend their flawless run to 17 wins.

Gladbach triumph as Dortmund stumble again

Borussia Mönchengladbach claimed bragging rights in the Rhine derby, beating Cologne 3-1 in a chaotic encounter dominated by VAR drama. Kristoffer Lund endured a nightmare afternoon, conceding two penalties and later being substituted. Philipp Sander and Kevin Diks both converted from the spot before Haris Tabaković sealed the result, with Luca Waldschmidt’s late penalty nothing more than consolation for Cologne.

Borussia Dortmund’s mixed season continued as they were held 1-1 by promoted Hamburger SV. Carney Chukwuemeka’s strike midway through the second half looked to have earned Dortmund the points until Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer snatched a leveller in the seventh minute of stoppage time. It was another reminder that Dortmund’s grip on the Bundesliga elite remains fragile despite flashes of quality.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga: Hoffenheim stunned title-chasing Leipzig with a 3-1 win that ended the visitors’ eight-game unbeaten run, while Bayer Leverkusen demolished Heidenheim 6-0 after scoring five times before half-time. The result kept Leverkusen firmly in the top-four mix and reminded the league that Xabi Alonso’s side still boast serious attacking power.

The round’s other major talking point came in Berlin, where Union’s defiance against Bayern restored belief that the title race may yet have twists to come. Kompany’s side remain favourites, but the chasing pack — Leverkusen, Leipzig, and Dortmund — know the champions can be caught if that flawless rhythm continues to falter.
